After seeing our winning run end at two due to Hacken’s failure to get on the scoresheet on Thursday, Friday’s Football Bet of the Day sees me head to the Scottish Championship, and I’ve highlighted a goals-based selection in one of the fixtures.
⚽️ Ross County vs St Johnstone
🏴 Championship
⏰ Friday 8 August, 19:45
The two favourites for promotion in the Scottish Championship this season meet up in Dingwall tonight as Ross County hosts St Johnstone in a fixture that appeals to me for goals.
It’s been a stuttering start to the campaign for Don Cowie’s hosts, as they failed to qualify from their League Cup group after drawing away at lower league Stranraer and being beaten 1-3 at home to Partick Thistle in the group decider.
The Staggies appeared to be making a winning start to their Championship campaign as a double from defender Akil Wright gave them a two-goal lead at Airdrieonians, but the Diamonds scored twice in the final half hour to rescue a point.
St Johnstone, on the other hand, have made a positive start to their campaign, as they cruised through their League Cup group, winning all four of their matches, scoring 16 goals in the process.
Simo Valakari’s men briefly fell behind against Partick Thistle in their Championship curtain raiser last weekend, but The Saints fired in five goals of their own to win 5-1 and go top of the Championship table at this early stage.
Bet of the Day
Ross County’s opening five Championship and League Cup encounters this term have averaged an eye-catching 3.80 goals per game, with Over 2.5 Goals landing in each of their previous three (1-1, 1-0, 8-0, 1-3 & 2-2).
St Johnstone’s opening five Championship and League Cup contests this campaign have averaged a whopping 4.60 goals per game, with Over 2.5 Goals banking in four (80%) of them (3-1, 1-0, 3-1, 8-0 & 5-1), only keeping clean sheets against lower league Inverness CT and Elgin City.
Matches between the pair last season were generally entertaining, with the games finishing 3-3, 3-0, 1-0 & 2-1, with the solitary meeting at Dingwall being that thrilling 3-3 draw.
Given both these sides have found the back of the net in all five of their competitive matches this season, but only kept clean sheets against lower league opposition, I’m expecting an entertaining encounter on Friday night.
- Over 2.5 Goals
- Pays 1/1 (Bet365/William Hill)
