The LA Galaxy welcome in-form Seattle Sounders to Dignity Health Sports Park in the early hours of Thursday morning in the semi-finals of the Leagues Cup in a tie that appeals to me for goals.
To say it’s been a contrasting season compared to last for The Galaxy is perhaps one of the biggest understatements about, as last season’s MLS Cup champions are bottom of the entire MLS table this campaign, picking up just 19 points from their opening 27 MLS encounters.
However, Greg Vanney’s hosts have improved in the previous couple of months, with their 3-0 success at home to the Colorado Rapids at the weekend being their seventh victory across their previous 15 matches in all competitions (W7-D4-L4), with all seven of those wins coming on home soil.
Seattle have been in sensational form following their disappointing showing at the Club World Cup in June, with long-standing head coach, Brian Schmetzer, seeing his side win nine and lose just one of their next 13 contests in all competitions.
The latest of those victories saw The Sounders thrash Sporting KC 5-2 at home in the early hours of Monday morning, meaning they remain in fourth position in the Western Conference table, nine points behind leaders San Diego FC, albeit with a game in hand.

The Galaxy’s previous 12 encounters in all competitions have averaged an eye-catching 3.67 goals per game, with Over 2.5 Goals banking in 10 of their past 11, whilst five of their past eight have seen four or more goals.
The Sounders’ previous 18 contests in all competitions have averaged 3.67 goals per game, with Over 2.5 Goals paying out in 13 (72%) of them – including in nine of their past 11 – whilst seven of their last 11 have broken the Over 3.5 Goals barrier.
The Sounders won 0-4 at this venue in the MLS just over a fortnight ago, and whilst I don’t see this being as one-sided, I do expect there to be goals.
