Fantasy premier league tips

In this article, we have provided our Fantasy Premier League tips & predictions ahead of Gameweek 17 of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game.

Gameweek 17 is the last round of fixtures before Christmas, and there are plenty of exciting match-ups ahead that will affect who we select for our FPL teams. FPL managers should be warned not to make their moves too early though, as there are also as many as four fixtures in the Carabao Cup in midweek involving Premier League sides which could see late injuries or other issues occur ahead of this weekend's fixtures.

Here are our latest FPL tips that should hopefully help make all of those informed decisions needed ahead of the deadline…

Our Fantasy Premier League tips

FPL gives out points based on player performances, which can be both positive and negative. It can range from a player scoring a goal (positions are given more points than others, for example a defender will gain six points for scoring a goal as opposed to four for a forward) or being shown a yellow card (-1pt), as well as many other metrics.

Who to have as FPL captain

In Gameweek 17, if you own him, Mohamed Salah seems like the obvious captain choice given his sparkling form for Liverpool, as they visit a Tottenham Hotspur team without their first-choice goalkeeper in Guglielmo Vicario and centre-back pairing of Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven.

For those who do not own Salah or want to pick a differential captain, Cole Palmer is another intriguing choice, as Chelsea travel to Goodison Park to face Everton in great form.

Should the triple-captain chip be used?

Assuming that Salah is the most viable captain choice in Gameweek 17, using the triple-captain chip on him could seem tempting given his recent form, and the fact that Liverpool are playing a Spurs side without some of their key players.

However, we would advise, if it has not been used already, to use the chip in a double gameweek, where teams play more than one fixture and therefore give more of a chance of a big points haul for the captain.

Who is likely to get booked?

Nicolas Jackson is a popular cheap enabler for FPL managers, given his likelihood of minutes and attack threat. However, the Chelsea forward is on four yellow cards, and just one more would see him serve a one-game suspension, which is something to think about before bringing the Blues talisman in ahead of their relatively kind next set of fixtures on paper.

Market-best odds on Nicolas Jackson to be booked: 19/5

Which defender is most likely to score?

Josko Gvardiol is now the outright highest-scoring defender in the Premier League so far in the 2024/25 campaign after netting his fourth goal in Manchester City's 2-1 defeat against Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium in the Manchester derby last time out. Pep Guardiola's side have some kind fixtures coming up to try and turn their dreadful form around, starting with a trip to Aston Villa who have one of the leakiest defences in the division.

Market-best odds on Josko Gvardiol to score anytime: 10/1

Our top three cheap in-form players

Amad Diallo

After a man-of-the-match (MOTM) performance which saw him win a penalty and score the winner for Manchester United against their noisy neighbours last time out, Amad Diallo should be on all FPL managers radar's given his affordable price. Indeed, the midfielder costs a mere £5.2m in the game at the time of writing, and is a great enabler to fit the better but more expensive players in our 15-man squads.

Alex Iwobi

Alex Iwobi is priced slightly more than Amad at £5.7m, but still offers a consistency of minutes and plenty of attacking threat that makes him a great asset in the game. Fulham have some nice fixtures coming up as well, starting this weekend where they host rock-bottom Southampton at Craven Cottage.

Jurrien Timber

Gabriel Magalhaes (£6.1m) may seem the obvious Arsenal defender to pick given his goal threat from set pieces, but for those looking for a second Gunners defender or just a cheaper route into their defence, look no further than Jurrien Timber. The Netherlands international full-back loves to bomb forward and support attacks, and with Crystal Palace away from home and Ipswich Town at the Emirates Stadium to come up for Mikel Arteta's side, there is plenty of clean sheet and attacking potential for Timber.
