IT was a first and second for Johnb on Friday with the nap winning at 7-4 and the NB just missing out at 11-2.

The nap was Alex My Boy and hopefully our man will repeat the success on Saturday with a massive 20-1 nap gamble. Although as Johnb points out anyone not as confident as himself can go each way.

Johnb's Saturday tips

Newmarket 2.30
MASTER OF FINANCE 7-1 William Hill

Haydock 2.55
EDUCATE 6-1 Ladbrokes Bet365

BLACK SCHNAPPS 20-1 NAP Ladbrokes Bet365

Lingfield 6.20
MARIA MONTEZ 11-4 NB Paddy Power

Johnb says: “Because it's saturday I said I would pick one meeting & a horse for every race & this week it's Haydock. But remember these are not my main tips.”

Haydock tips

1:50 Profitable 2-11
2:20 Lahaag 10-1
2:55 Educate 6-1
3:25 Lightning Thunder 11-8
4:00 Lesha 15-2
4:35 Elsiniaar 11-4
5:05 Black Schnapps 20-1

Black Schnapps (NAP)

I have napped this horse at 20-1 & anyone not as confident can do it each way at that price but his form is good enough to win this. Last time out he was 12th of 18 in the King George at Ascot but the jockey made too much of the horse too early and he faded in the final furlong. Also the ground was probably too firm but it was a decent run behind the likes of Elite Army, Windshear, Arab Dawn & Alex My Boy.

Before that race he had a really eye-catching run here at Haydock when this time he was probably given too much to do but really finished well & was catching the first two of Wrangler & Montaaly. He also had two good wins before that race at Salisbury & Doncaster. Like I said earlier the ground was too firm for Black Schnapps last time but anything from good ground or softer would be great for him but really the more rain the better. Even if no more rain comes the ground just now would be okay.

Black Schnapps has improved a lot lately & he has the scope to improve a lot more & 20-1 for this horse is just too big. I even think 10-1 would have been a massive price.

Good luck everyone.

John b, another jockey of serious talent who will never come back is Eddie Ahern. I know every case is different and Im not sure of the total extent of his corruption but what are your opinions of this ride??

    • 1plus2 4 years ago

Eddie Ahern, a leading member of Britain’s weighing room for more than a decade, has been banned from racing for 10 years by the British Horseracing Authority for a series of breaches of the anti-corruption rules, including one instance in which he deliberately stopped one of his mounts.

Neil Clement, a racehorse owner and former professional footballer with West Bromwich Albion, has also been banned from the sport for 15 years and three months for using information from Ahern to lay bets against his horses on the Betfair betting exchange.

Ahern was found to have deliberately prevented Judgethemoment, a six-year-old gelding trained by Jane Chapple-Hyam, from running on its merits in a two-mile handicap at Lingfield on 21 January 2011. Ahern set a furious pace on Judgethemoment, “what one would expect in a six- or seven-furlong race” in the eyes of the panel, and then dropped back through the field from halfway.

Clement, whose phone records showed frequent contacts with Ahern, was found to have placed a number of “lay” bets against Judgethemoment, including a spread bet which risked a maximum loss of £41,500 in order to win £8,500. It was one of only 11 bets placed on the account in British racing, and risked a greater loss than the other 10 combined.

Clement was also found to have laid four more horses ridden by Ahern on the basis of inside information received from the jockey, and to have conspired with Michael Turl and James Clutterbuck, son and assistant to the Newmarket trainer Ken Clutterbuck, to lay the yard’s Stoneacre Gareth in a race at Lingfield in March 2011. Turl was disqualified for 24 months and fined £10,000, while Clutterbuck, who intends to appeal against the length of the penalty, was banned for 30 months.

Ahern, who was Ireland’s champion apprentice in 1997 and rode 140 winners in 2006, his best year in the saddle, is the most successful jockey to be warned off by the Authority for deliberately stopping a horse. His big-race record includes Group One wins in the 1999 Moyglare Stud Stakes and 2011 Irish St Leger, in which he rode John Gosden’s Duncan to dead-heat with Jukebox Jury. He rode at least 100 winners four years in a row from 2003, from an average of 1,000 rides per year, though his total for 2013 prior to Wednesday’s ban was just 10 winners from 127 rides.

Ahern has also courted controversy, however, as he was banned for three months in December 2007 after he was found to have deliberately committed a whip offence in order to trigger a suspension at a quiet point in the season.

Neither Ahern nor Clement attended Wednesday’s hearing at the BHA’s offices at High Holborn in London. Martin Raymond and Paul Hill, two professional gamblers who also faced charges in the case, were both cleared of any breaches of the rules.

Jonathan Harvie QC, who represented Ahern at the hearing, said as he left the BHA: “History is littered with imperfect decisions. I’m not for a moment criticising the tribunal, they came to a decision in good faith and so on and so forth. I happen to think that there might have been a different view and there might even have been a better view, but it’s not for me to impugn the judgment of the tribunal.

“[Ahern] rode by his own admission an ill-judged race [on Judgethemoment]. It didn’t work and he finished last and Mr Clement had a very substantial lay bet on the horse. That is where you get into difficulty with these cases, how and on what basis do you draw the inference.”

Ahern’s solicitor Christopher Stewart-Moore said his client intends to appeal against both the BHA disciplinary panel’s findings and the severity of the suspension.

“Eddie Ahern is absolutely devastated. He did not breach the rules of racing as found by the panel and he will be appealing both the findings as well as the very harsh penalties imposed on him.”

The impasse between the British and French racing authorities over when or if Frankie Dettori can return to race-riding after a six-month ban for using cocaine may move closer to a resolution on Thursday, when Stewart-Moore, also Dettori’s solicitor, is expected to meet with officials from France Galop in Paris.

A brief statement from the BHA on Wednesday said that the Authority had been in touch with its counterpart in France, which had “confirmed that the issue sits with their medical committee, and that the specifics of the case have to remain confidential between that committee and Mr Dettori”.

1plus2 I guess that clears things up but never has such a serious talent been left to rot.

        • 1plus2 4 years ago

Well dude if he was genuinely corrupt then serves him right and the evidence does seem to be against him so he deserved all he got.

I think I’m gonna have a go on the place pots tomorrow aswell as a lucky 15.

But the one horse I know I’m backing is Lightning Thunder (NAP) have been looking out for this since Ascot where I’m sure it would have won, if it hadn’t been pulled up (think it went wrong). Good luck tomorrow lads and YAY footy coupons are back :-D

I’m gonna lose a fortune today haha :-)

  5. DeAndre 4 years ago

Dudes, love the avatar btw, I watched that race…I didn’t really feel that he went off on a mad pace, the horse just didn’t stay(for whatever reason) the rest all finished like trains so that would suggest it was a decent pace and no more…just my 2 cents worth :-D

    • cooldude 4 years ago

DeAndre, Ahern is serving a 10 year ban, the third longest ever enforced by the BHA. Whilst I sympathized with Fergal Lynch Im not sure the overall extent of Aherns corruption

  6. Chris Guy 4 years ago

Johnb do you expect the price for your Nap will be cut even further tomorrow?

  7. DeAndre 4 years ago

If it was just that race then it seems to be a little harsh, but honestly I’m not totally clued up on the whole thing. I’m just commenting on that race as an isolated incident.

  14. johnb 4 years ago

Cooldude i thought it was clear at the time & so did the bha going by their verdict
You can clearly see Eddie Ahern pushing the horse along for about the first 10 strides which is ok if you want to get to the front but as far i i saw he made no attempt to control the horse he just let it go at its pace which is clearly too fast for a 2m race
When you talk about a horse running freely its a horse that wants to go at its own pace bit in this instance the horse was asked by Ahern to go faster & then left to run on its own
He was given 10 years because he was found guilty & evidence was there to come to that verdict

The difference with Eddie Ahern & Fergal Lynch was Fergal Lynch was aquitted but he did admit to stopping a horse & some will say atleast he admitted it & maybe should get a lighter sentence but to me i would find it hard to trust him again & i would be in the no tolerence group & doesnt matter what the sport is for me Cheating to deliberately stop you from winning or taking drugs to help you win should be a life ban but thats me & their are people more sympathetic than me but whos to say who is right its just opinions mate :)

  15. johnb 4 years ago

Horsing Around i never bet at Ascots Shergar Cup because its the one day when you never get a true run out of horses
Team tactics come into play & jockeys will be riding who normally wouldnt ride there
Also jockeys riding horses who they wouldnt normally be on & then Ascot has also been hit with the rain
Its a good day out though but the only bet i could advise is for which team will win the cup for an interest

    Shergar Cup Winning Team
    EUROPE 15/8 skybet

    2.55 Haydock. Hillstar

You would have thought that at the age of 4 this horse would have learned to settle in his races. I feel if he had then he would have won more than the 2 races he has (from 11). Significantly, those 2 career wins happened when todays jockey was on board, others have tried and failed. Hillstar has never run at Haydock before and I feel the track will suit. Could well be a shrewd piece of placing by the master trainer.

Good morning racing fans 2 nice winners yesterday but hey that’s history Saturday is usually a bookies benefit day so lets not let him fill his satchel from this thread.

    2:40 Ascot “MAGIC CITY” 7/2 bet365

Last run over a mile and ridden by R Hughes was wagging the tail till 2 furlongs out when started to stay on but could not get a passage through and when a space came it was to late finished like the proverbial train. tactics were all wrong should have made his move sooner.

    4:35 Haydock “MULTI BENE” 15/2 bet365

Last run kept going in mid division till about 2 furlongs chased leader 1 furlong out but was just held in 2nd place.

Will put up my selections for Ayr later today.

Well guys my usual Saturday feed the bookies weans day they’ll be on to fish fingers the night. Anyway down to the serious business:

    Ayr 6:40 “BLUE SONIC” 9/2 bet365

Looks the one to beat on ground I’m sure she’ll appreciate. A grey daughter of a smart miler”PROCLAMATION” she ran well enough in the maidens before a promising debut in handicap company I think she’ll go close.

    7:40 Ayr “CLASSY ANNE” 0/30 bet365

Classy Anne is on a roll and she’ll take all the beating after an impressive win at Hamilton last week the evil handicapper has put her up 6 pounds for that. The ground and the course obviously suit and claimer Jack Garrity knows her well.

    8:10 Ayr “GRAND DIAMOND” 13/2 bet365

Grand Diamond has been chapping at the door and the way he’s running he’ll appreciate the trip as long as the ground doesn’t become soft.

rookie I backed both of them for a small profit, but not a tip,as raal said months ago So long as we put up honest selections,we will get a return. We usually get slaughtered on Saturdays so I hope some made a profit today.
