All eyes on Pendleton at Ripon

Victoria Pendleton takes another step towards her quest to ride at the Cheltenham Festival when she rides at Ripon on Monday.

Despite being a total novice in the saddle, the dual gold medal-winning cyclist announced in March she was training to become a jockey, with a long-term aim of competing in the Foxhunter Chase at next year’s Cheltenham Festival.

After four months of intensive training and riding out five times a week for Oxfordshire-based trainer Lawney Hill,
Pendleton made her racecourse debut in a charity event at Newbury in early July, finishing down the field aboard Mighty Mambo.

Having recently been awarded her ‘Category A’ licence, she heads to North Yorkshire on Bank Holiday Monday to partner the Hill-trained Royal Etiquette in the 15-runner Betfair Novice Flat Amateur Riders’ Handicap

Hill said: “We’re all looking forward to it and I know Victoria is really keen to get going again as it’s quite a while since she rode at Newbury on July 2.

“I’ve never been to Ripon before personally and neither has the horse. I hope they don’t get too much rain.

“It’s not going to be an easy race for Victoria as there are quite a lot of runners and she is going to have to try and weave her way through. She’s more used to doing that on a bicycle than on horseback!”

Hill is not even thinking about victory, concentrating solely on bringing Pendleton through the experience safe and sound at this early stage of her training.

“It is another step up the ladder and the main thing is to try and keep her safe and give her another good experience.
We all want to win, of course, but we don’t want to run before we can walk and this horse is similar to Mighty Mambo in that he’s fairly exposed, but he should look after Victoria – he doesn’t go tearing off,” said Hill.

“Victoria has ridden him quite a lot at home, so she knows him well and fingers crossed everything goes well.”

I personally fancy ICE KONIG in the race at 7/1 but it wasn’t strong enough to be a tip
Good luck to Victoria though because the work she has put in over the last few months has been hard

    Timeform comments:

Dakota City (5 out of 5 stars): Benefitted from application of visor when scoring at Lingfield (10f, AW) in July. Improved again in defeat when runner up at that venue 4 weeks ago, and claims again.
Race commentary: DAKOTA CITY has been much improved in a visor of late, collared late on having made an early move at Lingfield recently. He gets the chance to confirm his improvement back on turf, with the in-form English Summer and Bold Runner just two potential dangers.

Huge price for the only horse in the race that has won on soft going, in fact worth pointing out that the selection has also won at Epson on heavy ground, so any more rain would be welcome.

    5:35 Cheptow – Dandys Perier @ 4/1 (NB)
Runner up on last three starts and returns to the course were the selection last won last month.

Never done horse tipping but on this dakotia if I put £50 to win only getting 400. If I put £50 ew it’s £100 with returns £520. So if he it comes 1st 2nd or 3rd it’s a win right ??

  49. Alex 3 years ago

Mcfc1975 to answer your question if you take 8-1 £50 E/W it means that if the Nap wins you get:

    £50 x 8 = £400 plus your £50 stake Total £450

    E/W £50 x 1.6/1 = £80 plus your £50 stake Total £130

If it only places you only get £130 back as per E/W.

Bit harsh in all honesty John B has 47.71pts profit before today and your moking his tips?

for those that dont know/havent been on here that long John B has been known to give out 33/1 anti post winners < so argue with that??

He also states: stick to level stakes! if your going to put money you cant afford to loose on, then whos fault is it really?

And lastly no body forces you to do his horses, if you dont like his horse then simply do your own!

  82. Lamzat 3 years ago

    Timeform comments:

Galesburg (5 out of 5 stars): Much improved on penultimate start when landing a Leicester maiden (6f), but never landed a blow at York last time after being hampered early on. Worth another chance with step up in trip a positive.
Race commentary: GALESBURG had little chance of building on his Leicester success when hampered at an early stage at York last time, but has given the impression he will appreciate this longer trip, and is taken to resume winning ways. Zahrat Narjis and Show Me Again may give him most to think about.

Keep them coming John b roll on September! Does anyone know if American phowoah will still go breeders cup?

  98. Luke A 3 years ago

Chris might not have known what he was saying, and what he said was ridiculous! But what I said was accurate. I said for as brilliant as English Summer was, the joint nap/nb was equally atrocious. It was the worst performance from a double stake selection I’ve seen. But, I went on to say how providing people stick to the staking plan Johnb forever advises, then it was only 2 points lost today! And also said about how great his stats for August and the year are!
Not quite sure why that would get deleted as that is all very accurate and fair. I wasn’t having a go at Johnb, far from!
Let’s hope for a September that can be equally as good as August has been
