Hartlepool V Brentford, Saturday, 5.20pm

MILESEY won the single wars on Friday as he posted Borussia M'gladbach before we.

Hopefully my view added some insurance to the tip and Borussia duly won at a handy price.

I can't be accused of copying Milesey's single this time although Brentford are on the aways in my Record column which was finished by 6pm on Friday. Anyway here are Milesey's thoughts on the game.

Milesey's verdict: Hartlepool will play their football in League Two next season after being relegated on Tuesday night without even kicking a ball.

The Pools were cut miles adrift earlier this season but an impressive improvement in form saw them inch within just a handful of points of safety.

However, it was too little, too late for John Hughes’s men as Oldham’s victory during the week condemned them to the drop.

Now Hartlepool will just hope to build on a run of back-to-back victories in hopes of avoiding finishing in bottom spot.

This weekend they host a Brentford side who are just one point away from the automatic promotion places.

The Bees could have moved into the top two on Tuesday night but were held to a 2-2 draw with fellow promotion candidates Sheffield United to leave them just one behind Bournemouth and only three adrift of league leaders Doncaster.

Uwe Rosler’s men have suffered just one defeat in their last eight league matches but a lot of this is down to their dominant home form where they have won 14 and only lost two games all season.

Away from home they falter, winning on just one of their previous five trips. While that doesn’t stand them in good stead ahead of their trip to Victoria Park they will still fancy themselves to pocket the points against a deflated Hartlepool outfit.

    Milesey,
In the super single competition you have quoted stoke to beat QPR but above you are tipping QPR to win? which 1 is your correct tip?

    • Mr Fixit 12 years ago

Zedster, I don’t know about the contest but he’s definitely tipping QPR to win – and I have to agree.

    • Milesey 12 years ago

I’ve not entered any competition, on the super single comp, i was pointing LORD CLEGG in the right direction for he had put stoke to beat Norwich, and i stated to him that Stoke were playing QPR and Norwich V Reading.

Hi Milesey picking my team to beat Everton does this mean u think different now of them being relegated.

    • Milesey 12 years ago

They were on the slide with Martin O’Neil in charge, but with the 3-0 win at Newcastle Di Canio has seemed to have kicked them into gear, between Wigan and Villa i would guess now, Stoke will do enough to survive just not today for QPR will beat them, just hope this doesn’t give them the right to sack Tony Pullis, for if they do this then Stoke will be my favourites for the drop and if they do end up in the championship, i will be the first one on to get on STOKE to be relegated next season from the championship, for the biggest mistake they can make is to get rid of Tony, he will do enough to keep them safe.

    MILESEY’S MULTIPLE MAGIC
    *************************

Paolo Di Canio gave the Premier League a flavour of his box-office personality at St James’ Park last weekend and now his jubilant Sunderland (3.38) side can build on their emphatic Tyne-Wear derby triumph by putting Everton to the sword in his first showing at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.

It might sound like an ambitious call to those taking an objective view of events at Newcastle. The Black Cats deserved their win but the margin flattered them on an afternoon when they profited from a linesman’s flag shortly before hitting the jackpot with two late strikes from distance.

Nonetheless, their willingness to attack when the opportunity arose was, in essence, the purchase of a proverbial raffle ticket, indicative of how attitudes are changing on Wearside following the Italian’s arrival. It’s nigh on impossible to imagine that such an outcome materialising under Martin O’Neill.

In the Championship, Crystal Palace stretched their miserable run without a goal to 456 minutes in midweek – during which time they’ve conceded 11 times – and the ultra-positive Ian Holloway faces an impossible mission trying to quell the negativity engulfing the club ahead of Saturday’s visit from Leicester (2.71).

The Foxes must have been prepared top wave goodbye to their play-off hopes when they dropped out of the top six towards the end of a nine-match winless run but they summoned up a little something extra to edge past Bolton in a pulsating encounter on Tuesday.

So now there might be a born-again enthusiasm about their play rather than the paralysing weight of expectation that has burdened them for most of the campaign. We rate Nigel Pearson’s men as the division’s most dominant force in terms of shot data and the other contenders ought to be afraid if they close-out the campaign with conviction.

There’s likely to be no shortage of drama in League One this weekend but don’t expect much of it to be occurring at the Ricoh Arena where Leyton Orient’s feint play-off hopes ought to be extinguished by a superior but luckless Coventry (2.63) side.

The O’s are one of four teams who can still catch sixth-placed Swindon but it would need a sequence of events bordering on the miraculous for Russell Slade’s men to gatecrash the party – and they know it – so don’t bank on them raising their game to the standard required to topple the Sky Blues in their own backyard.

Credit must go to Steven Pressley for keeping Coventry competitive. The last two home games have seen leaders Doncaster beaten and third-placed Brentford held, so it’s evident that the Midlanders are still up to the task, albeit in a different manner to the swagger they were showing earlier in the season.

Torquay took a massive step towards League Two survival with victory in their rearranged game against Barnet on Tuesday but their exertions in that five-goal thriller could come at a price when they make the five-hour journey north to Morecambe (2.27) on Saturday.

Some punters might be put off by the fact that Morecambe have nothing to play for but we’re satisfied that risk has been adequately factored into the price and we’re confident that Jim Bentley will get the response he wants after last Friday’s sub-standard display in the 2-0 defeat at local rivals Accrington

Seven of Torquay’s dozen wins this season have been against teams still embroiled in the dogfight while they’ve only won one out of 18 away games against the teams above them, so it looks like an ideal opportunity for Morecambe to round off their best season at the Globe Arena in fine style.

      GOALSCORER GAMBLE
      ——————

The French striker has four goals in his last six games and looks like he has a future in the Premier League, even if QPR don’t.

It’s unlikely that the team who snaps Remy up will prove to be Stoke. The Potters are nosediving towards relegation and are without a win in their last seven Premier League games.

When you consider that their last win against Reading counts as Stoke’s only victory of 2013, then it’s fair to describe Tony Pulis’ side as the easiest pickings in the division. Remy can be backed at 2.52 to score against Stoke’s once lauded defence.

Next we take a look at this evening’s televised clash between Hartlepool and promotion chasing Brentford. The North East hosts are already relegated, so this presents a real opportunity for Brentford, who are just three points behind the league leaders Doncaster and one point behind second-placed Bournemouth.

Brentford will have to do without their suspended top scorer Clayton Donaldson, who has 22 goals in all competitions, but the Bees still have plenty of scoring power.

Remember when Bradley Wright-Phillips was considered one of the brightest young talents in the English game? His career never hit the same heights as his older brother, but he may well have found a level where he can flourish.

Wright-Phillips scored 22 goals for Charlton as they won promotion to the Championship and now finds himself back in League One, on-loan at Brentford. He has scored four goals in his last three games and we’re going to back him at 5.6 to score the first goal.

There are few strikers in Europe right now who are in better form than Sevilla’s Alvaro Negredo. The Spanish international has eight goals in his last six games.

Sevilla have a tough home fixture this weekend against a third-placed Atletico Madrid side that are trying to hang on to Real Madrid’s coattails. While it’s tough opposition, the good news is that it has only served to send Negredo’s price northwards. He’s available at 2.6 to find the net, which looks like good value.

Back to the Premier League now, as we look towards a side desperate for points. Newcastle’s home defeat to Sunderland has put them back in danger and they will be hoping for a positive result away at a West Brom side that have precious little to play for.

The Baggies are without a win in three games. The player that Newcastle will be looking towards to do them damage is Papiss Cisse. The Senegalese striker has scored three goals in his last four games and has a penchant for late strikes.

Cisse has struck in the 90th minute in three of Newcastle’s last eight games. With the Magpies fighting to the last, I like the odds of 7.0 that Cisse will score the last goal.

Finally we go to Italy for Inter Milan’s home clash with Parma. Inter are struggling down in seventh place, amid an injury crisis that sees them without such attacking talent as Rodrigo Palacio and Diego Milito.

The striker crisis has seen Inter’s attacking midfielder Ricardo Alvarez pushed further forward and he’s responded with three goals in Inter’s last three games.

That makes the likely odds of around 4.33 for Alvarez to find the net, pretty attractive. Very often it takes the market a little while to catch up with changes in form and position. This is one such example and a good chance to take advantage.

      Recommended Bets

Best Bet: Back Remy to score at 2.52
Back Wright-Phillips to score first at 5.6
Back Negredo to score at 2.6
Back Cisse to score last at 7.0
Back Alvarez to score at 4.33

      LAY OF THE DAY
      ***************

QPR and Stoke are the lowest scorers in the Premier League but Mr M thinks there could be fireworks when they meet at Loftus Road this afternoon.

QPR are all but relegated – 10 points adrift of safety with just a possible 15 to play for. Harry Redknapp was brought in to save their season but after a brief flurry, he actually has a similar record to his predecessor Mark Hughes.

The problem for Rangers has been in front of goal as with just 29 scored, they have averaged less than one per game. Interestingly though, the blank at Everton last weekend was the first time they’ve failed to score since facing Manchester United in February. Since that defeat, they netted twice against Southampton, Aston Villa and Fulham, and once against Sunderland and Wigan.

Stoke are really struggling at the moment and it all seems to have gone wrong since their hugely impressive 3-1 victory over Liverpool on Boxing Day. The Potters were dreaming of Europe after that result, but it’s been back to Earth with a bang in 2013 after 10 defeats in 13 and just one win.

Tony Pulis’ men are usually safe by this time of the year so it will be interesting to see if they can handle the pressure of a relegation scrap. They have slipped to 16th in the table, a mere three points clear of Wigan, who incidentally have a game in hand.

Like their opponents, scoring goals has been a problem for Stoke. They are the lowest scorers in the entire division with just 29 to their name, with only nine of those coming away from home. They have to go for it today though as even a draw won’t help their cause too much.

The statistics point to this one being low scoring but I have a feeling it could end up like one of those end of season crackers that finishes up with a cricket score. It’s win or bust for QPR, and Stoke badly need all three points as well. That’s why, with under 2.5 goals trading around the 1.76 mark, I have to make it my lay of the day.

      Recommended Bet
Lay Under 2.5 goals in QPR v Stoke @ 1.76

    MONTE CARLO – TENNIS
    ———————

Grigor Dimitrov did better than I thought against Rafa Nadal on Friday at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters, which brought my winning run to an end.

Rafa was still the winner that most observers expected him to be, but the young Bulgarian provided enough moments of real quality to take the match into a deciding set, at which point his physical condition let him down.

It’s semi final Saturday in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin and Nadal takes on Jo-Wilfried Tsonga for the only the second ever time on clay, but the 11th time on all surfaces, with the score line currently standing at 7-3 to the Spaniard.

Tsonga will not want to dwell too long on that single clay court experience, which took place in Spain in Davis Cup and the Frenchman won just six games in three sets.

Nadal was pretty poor in the second set against Dimitrov and he’ll be aware of that and I can’t see him allowing Tsonga the same kind of privilege on Saturday.

Dimitrov has a much larger range of shots than Tsonga and is a more accomplished defender than the big man, which will allow Rafa to dictate the play as he loves to do.

Tsonga needs to serve as well as he possibly can and be ultra attacking, as he’s not going to match Rafa in the long rallies. But it’s possible that with a high serve percentage and a day where he finds the lines that he could trouble Nadal.

There was talk of Nadal struggling with his back in the post match press conference on Friday and no doubt the slow conditions with rain in the air didn’t help his cause against Dimitrov, so if it’s overcast and cold again on Saturday that will help Tsonga’s chances too.

The forecast is for rain on Saturday, so with the possible back issue and conditions that aren’t ideally suited to Rafa’s game I would avoid any really short prices about the Spaniard in this one.

So, given the situation I’ll side with Tsonga to be good enough to take this one with a 5.5 game start on the handicap and hope for some rain.

    Recommended Bet
Back Tsonga +5.5 games to beat Nadal at 1.84

    TASTY TREBLE
    ————-

    Burnley v Cardiff

Let’s kick things off in the glorious surroundings of the Championship then. So, Cardiff finally did it and now Bluebirds’ fans can freely salivate over the prospect of beating Swansea in the Premier League.

But anyone who thinks this is where the season stops for Cardiff is mistaken. Malky Mackay’s promoted side are yet to be confirmed as champions, something they’ll want to rectify at the nearest opportunity and can do with victory at Burnley.

This is a scenario which appears highly likely, as Sean Dyche’s Clarets are in poor form, especially in front of their fans. Their seven previous games at Turf Moor have seen them reap just six points from a possible 21, with their only win arriving against relegated Bristol City.

    Bet 1: Cardiff @ 2.7

    Bolton v Middlesbrough

Bolton’s bid to gatecrash the Championship play-off places undeniably took a dent when losing at Leicester on Tuesday night.

However, Dougie Freedman will not allow his side to lose sight of the end gain after such a setback with nine points still to play for and things so tight in the play-off
frame, especially as the Foxes face fifth-placed Crystal Palace in a simultaneous Saturday kick-off.

Should Leicester drop points in London then a Wanderers win will see them leapfrog the midlanders into sixth, while a four-goal swing would see them displace Palace should Ian Holloway’s charges lose.

Bolton have been so strong at home recently, winning seven straight games at the Reebok Stadium, only conceding twice in that daunting run and keeping five consecutive clean sheets.

Enter Middlesbrough, whose appalling away record ranks third-worst only to Leeds and League One-bound Bristol City. It’s 10 losses and a draw for Tony Mowbray’s Boro in the 11 away days before this trip to Greater Manchester.

    Bet 2: Bolton @ 1.8

    Oxford United v Rochdale

Let’s drop down a few divisions now to the fourth tier of English football to complete this multiple, but returning to the away win theme.

Rochdale are in smashing form coming into this clash with fellow mid-table occupants Oxford United.

Keith Hill’s side had suffered an extensive slump in the middle part of their league campaign prior to his reappointment but have finally rediscovered their early-season promise, unbeaten in six, taking in three wins in their last four.

More impressively still, the calibre of opposition they have been beating is particularly notable. Before Saturday’s hugely creditable draw with second-placed Port Vale, the Lancashire outfit had beaten three teams in the top half, including promotion-chasing Exeter and Southend.

The goals have been flowing too, with an average of nearly three per game in Dale’s last four, thanks largely to the contributions of Robert Grant, Jason Kennedy and Ian Henderson.

That prolific trio can help them keep this impressive finish going by beating an Oxford side who’s season is in danger of petering out on a whimper, after four losses in their last six and no home win in three.

    Bet 3: Rochdale @ 2.62

      Brighton 2.0 v Blackpool 4.4; The Draw 3.6

Brighton’s run towards the play-offs appeared to be on a slippery road with just one win in their last five games, but the fact that they didn’t lose the other four (therefore picked up four points), and the other clubs in the play-off places also started dropping points means Gus Poyet’s men remain handily placed, three points ahead of seventh-placed Bolton.

One more win for the Seagulls will probably do and I’m expecting it to come this afternoon against a Blackpool side who have improved of late, but aren’t scoring enough goals to get the wins.

In fact it’s difficult to knock at first glance Blackpool’s run of just one defeat in 10 league games, but then you notice that Paul Ince’s men have won just three of their last 12 outings and the reason for that is obvious – a lack of goals. The Tangerines have scored just seven times in those 12 games, and only once have they scored two in the same game.

Blackpool are obviously defending well, but that statement also applies to Brighton at present, and with home advantage I fancy Poyet’s men to grab a narrow victory in what will probably turn out to be a low-scoring affair.

Recommended Bet: Back Brighton to win @ 2.0

      Watford 1.98 v Blackburn 4.3; The Draw 3.75

Another promotion-chasing team that can be backed at close to even money playing at home to a club at the wrong end of the table. And just like Brighton, Watford haven’t been winning frequently in the last few weeks. But the Hornets haven’t been playing badly and they remain one of the highest-scoring clubs in the country.

Two away defeats on the spin has virtually put pay to Watford’s chances of automatic promotion but the fact that mathematically they can still do it will be enough incentive for them to go all out for the win today.

Prior to those two away defeats Gianfranco Zola’s men had drawn with likely Champions Cardiff, defeated likely runners-up Hull away from home, and scored three against Burnley. These three results sum-up Watford in a nutshell, very good on their day and capable of matching it with any side in the division whilst having the ability to score goals.

Today’s rivals Blackburn will be devastated that they’ve won their last two games yet managed to pull just two points away from the relegation zone. Lose today and they are right back in trouble. Rovers have lost their last five away games and haven’t recorded an away victory in 2013. I don’t see anything changing this afternoon.

Recommended Bet: Back Watford to win @ 1.98

In the Netherlands eight of Willem II’s last ten home games have produced Over 2.5 Goals, as have 11/15 Roda JC away matches this season.

Recommended Bet: Back Over 2.5 Goals @ 1.65 in Willem II v Roda JC
