JOHNB wiped out his losses for April thanks to a cracking run from Grandads World on Tuesday.

The joint nap and NB was tipped at 4-1 and the double stake returned eight points, taking April into a 0.75pt profit.

It was a good day all round for the thread with plenty of winners so here's hoping for more of the same on Wednesday.

JohnB's Wednesday Tips

Catterick 2:20
Meshardal 7-2 NAP/NB Bet365 (double stake)

Casterbridge 12-1 William Hill

Lahayeb 13-2 Skybet

Meshardal (NAP/NB)
“Here we have a horse that finally turned a corner last year. Meshardal was trained by Richard Hannon and owned by Sheikh Hamdan, he is well bred by Shamardal but his form was poor and was sold.

“Ruth Carr has finally got this horse interested in racing with two wins and three seconds out of five runs last year. Last time out he came second again but proved he was still up to running well and with a recent run under his belt he can get on top here.

“He was also second here last year over this distance and is the only horse in the race with a recent run.”

Had a look at the 2000 Guineas the other day and came to the conclusion that CONSORT was worth a couple of quid e/w @20/1 .As I don’t buy the Racing Post I have just discovered I have been mugged by Pricewise who advised him at 33/1,Never Mind the form still looks solid enough GL.

This is my breakdown of the horses i feel are worthy of winning the Grand National on Saturday. Can anyone break down my list and point out who the frontrunners/top selections should be.

It would be very much appreciated.

This is my list of 12. Can i break it down to a Top 6?

    Monbeg Dude
    Gallant Oscar
    Royale Knight
    Night in Milan
    Al Co
    Oscar Time
    The Druids Nephew
    Balthazar King

Going to give this a try no crying please. Forever Now 3:40 Nottingham best price 11/8 Coral and will go off way shorter than this by all accounts. Just a little miffed that his partner in crime William Buick is riding the Godolphin horse. Still Richard Hughes is not to be sniffed at right?!

  16. double carpet 3 years ago

The august festival is a mixed card so it depends whether you prefer flat or jumps.
    Weds flat
    thurs mixed
    fri jumps
    sat (ladies day) mixed
my own preference is the flat card as the quality is better usually but as i say it depends on your preference.
gl enjoy the day and maybe win some money too !!

£4 Staked £300 returned thanks to John be

Going again with his plus 2 of mine:

    Nottingham 2.20 meshardal 3/1
    Lingfield 3.00 Ocean Legend 6/4
    Nottingham 3.40 forever now 5/4

  18. Smackeroonies 3 years ago

John, just my tuppence worth, and feel free to go with what you want.

Monbeg dude (has had his chance and there’s nothing to say he will do any better)
Gallant oscar (probably won’t get in but wouldn’t out you off it if it did)
Oscar time. (Is now 14 so would be really hard for it to win, loves the race though and there are worse ew bets but no chance of winning for me)
    Balleycasey. (Won’t stay)

So that’s 4 off the list straight away, of the others I really like AL CO, NIGHT IN MILAN, THEDRUIDS NEPHEW, and ROYALE KNIGHT, I have already backed them along with SAINT ARE.

The likes of SOLL and BALTHAZAR KING will both stay all day but I just feel they have had their chance and in the case of SOLL he is more of a plugger and will probably find at Least a few too good, and UNIONISTE just isn’t for me.

Hope this helps you narrow it down.

  19. Smackeroonies 3 years ago

    Sorry forgot godsmejudge!!!

Still trying to work this one out myself, if he turns up on his game he could win, I just have my doubts that they have struggled to get this horse to his peak again, I will probably end up having a small saver on it though just incase.

  20. Alanm 3 years ago

Smackaroonies good call I’m gonna be on Royal Knight and only bet so far.

  21. Bobajob 3 years ago

Thanks DC much appreciated fancy seeing both so Gona plan for the Thursday cheers

  22. Smackeroonies 3 years ago

I think royal knight might just lack a bit of class needed to win if I’m honest but they said that about pineu du re last year and this horse has a similar profile running in lower grade races and hurdles, has won a couple of long distance races like the Durham national etc over 4 miles and it will definately stay so I had to back it ew, my own Idea of the winner is between al co, saint are, night in Milan and the Druids nephew, just haven’t decided what one though, so backed them all ew ……it’s the national you’re allowed at least 5 :)

  23. Smackeroonies 3 years ago

Going to try a de Sousa ew treble tomorrow……

With over 150 years of history, the Grand National more than any race, has developed some deep trends associated with its winners. Jumped over a unique set of fences and run over the marathon distance of 4 miles 4 furlongs – the Grand National is an idiosyncratic race.
Horses rarely have to deal with this set of variables, and it takes certain characteristics to cope with them. Here we analyse the trends that past Grand National winners have stuck by.
Trend 1: All of the last 70 winners were aged between 8 and 12 years old.
With 30 fences to negotiate, varying in height and some of extreme difficulty, you need a horse that can jump. With age comes experience. Up to a point, the older a horse is, the better jumper it is. With so many obstacles, horses are bound to make mistakes but the older, experienced jumpers can stay upright when they make a bad leap. Beyond 12 years-old, the rigours of the race become too much and horses tend to be getting slower at this time in their careers.
Trend 2: The last 24 winners had previously won a chase over three miles or further.
The four and a half mile trip of the Grand National makes it one of the longest races on the National Hunt calendar. Akin to a marathon, the horses need to be proven over long distances.
Trend 3: 20 of the last 23 winners had won a chase with 12 or more rivals.
With 40 runners contesting the race each year, runners need to be used to the hurly burly of a big field. With such a scrum at each fence, horses need to be capable of jumping well even when suffering interference.
Trend 4: 8 of the last 10 winners had won at least a listed or graded race.
With a prize fund of almost £1million, better quality horses are contesting the race each year. The senior handicapper, Phil Smith, has also changed the way weight is allocated so that horses are more closely matched. With numerous entries rated 150+ it takes a good quality horse just to get into the race.
Trend 5: Only two horses have carried more than 11st 1lb to victory since 1983.
Due to the extreme distance of the race, weight seems to have an effect on the result but as the race evolves this is starting to change. Two of the last four winners carried 11-5 and 11-6 respectively.
Horses that fit all five trends
    The Druids Nephew 14/1
    Cause Of Causes 18/1
    Alvarado 20/1
    Godmejudge 22/1
    Al Co 25/1
    Pineau De Re 25/1
    Saint Are 33/1
    Chance Du Roy 40/1
    Monbeg Dude 40/1
    Wyck Hill 50/1
    Courst By Surprise 50/1
    Raz De Maree 66/1
    The Rainbow Hunter 66/1
