Celtic vs St Johnstone

, KO: 15:00 Dec 29, 2024, Parkhead
St Johnstone

CELTIC host St Johnstone on Sunday in what should be on paper anyway, a straightforward festive gift for their fans.

Both sides were in Boxing Day action and the hectic schedule continues this weekend.

Celtic by all accounts weren't at their best, but still managed to steamroll Motherwell in an easy 4-0 romp to move them 12 points clear of a Rangers side who lost at St Mirren.

Prior to that, they dropped points at Dundee United which was viewed as something of a huge shock, but it's hard to see them losing any time soon.

St Johnstone are seriously struggling though and are in a relegation dogfight after plunging to the bottom of the league following a 2-1 home loss to Dundee United.

New manager Simo Valakari seems to have improved their dull style of football, but results remain a major worry after one win in their last nine games, in which seven of them were defeats.

He will be counting down the days to the transfer window to bring his own players in and they could especially do with a new keeper.

How the bookies view it: Celtic huge good things

You won't get rich unless you have extremely deep pockets with the hosts 2/11 with Boylesports. St Johnstone are a massive 11/1 and the draw is 5/1.

Recent head to heads: Saints have previous

St Johnstone surprised Celtic last season when they managed to snatch a goalless draw at Parkhead, but have lost their last three games since, including a 6-0 walloping this season.

Their last win against the Hoops in Glasgow's east end came in 2015.

Players to watch: Arne an assassin?

Arne Engels opened the scoring for Celtic from the penalty spot against Motherwell and although the Belgian international has had his critics since his £9 million move, he has scored five goals. He is 9/4 to score anytime with Boylesports.

Mackenzie Kirk netted for the Saints the other day and he is 5/1 to repeat the feat with Boylesports on Sunday.

Predicted line-ups:

Celtic have Alistair Johnston as an injury doubt and James Forrest is out.

Saints have Aaron Essel, Andre Raymond and Adama Sidibeh back available.

Celtic: Schmeichel, Ralston, Carter-Vickers, Scales, Taylor, McGregor, Engels, Bernardo, Kuhn, Maeda, Idah.

St Johnstone: Rae, Wright, Mikulic, Sanders, Cameron, Keltjens, Holt, Neilson, Carey, Kirk, Kimpioka.

Anything else catch the eye?

It's hard to see anything other than a routine Hoops win here and it really should be a case of how many.

You would expect this to go the same way as the Motherwell game and the obvious shouts here are a Celtic win to nil at 20/21 with Boylesports and Celtic to win both halves with the same firm at 11/10.

Saints have been leaking goals and they have already shipped six to the Hoops already this season. It's hard to see them keeping this respectable.

A comparable game was last month when Celtic trounced Ross County 5-0 at Parkhead and won the corner count 19-0. So they should get into double figures again at 6/5 with Boylesports.
