Germany and Switzerland will play their final Group A match of Euro 2024 on Sunday night when they meet in Frankfurt. Germany need either a win or a draw to qualify as group winners while Switzerland need a win to top the group but just a point to ensure safe passage through to the round of 16 as runners-up.
In truth, even a defeat would likely be enough for Switzerland given their superior goal difference over Scotland which means we will effectively be watching a shootout for top spot on Sunday night, which has the potential to be very enjoyable.
Germany have two wins from two matches but will face their toughest test so far against a Swiss side who are so far unbeaten at Euro 2024. Will Nagelsmann's men make it nine points from three games in Frankfurt?
How the bookies view it: The hosts are favourites again
With each passing game, Germany's odds are shortening in respect to overall tournament winners. As a result, it should come as no surprise that they are priced as the 7/10 favourites with Betfred for the match against Switzerland. A Switzerland win is priced at 18/5 while the draw is priced at 3/1.
Recent head-to-head: Recent joy for the Swiss
Germany and Switzerland have met on the football field a total of 52 times with Germany winning 35 of those. However, despite German dominance in the overall H2H, the Swiss can take great encouragement from recent clashes. They are unbeaten in their last three matches against Germany and put three past them in the most recent meeting.
Last five H2H duels:
- 13/10/2020 (UEFA Nations League) – Germany 3-3 Switzerland
- 06/09/2020 (UEFA Nations League) – Switzerland 1-1 Germany
- 26/05/2012 (International Friendly) – Switzerland 5-3 Germany
- 26/03/2008 (International Friendly) – Switzerland 0-4 Germany
- 07/02/2007 (International Friendly) – Germany 3-1 Switzerland
Players to watch: The Musiala show
Euro 2024 is very quickly turning into the Jamal Musiala show. While a lot of the build-up was centred around Jude Bellingham, Musiala is proving that perhaps he is the superior 21-year-old despite all the hype around the England and Real Madrid man.
Musiala has netted two goals in two games for Germany at Euro 2024 and was their main creative spark in both matches. Although Julian Nagelmann may rotate some players to ensure freshness for the knockout stages, Musiala is one man who is considered undroppable and will cause Switzerland a wide range of problems.
Switzerland have some weapons of their own that will demand close attention. Veteran winger, Xherdan Shaqiri, has now scored in six consecutive international tournaments and always poses a threat with his wicked left foot.
Predicted lineups
As mentioned, Nagelsmann could rotate some players with the round of 16 looming. Niclas Füllkrug could get a start in place of Kai Havertz while both first-choice centre-backs are a booking away from suspension so they might not be risked.
For Switzerland, this much could be the perfect opportunity to give Breel Embolo his first start of the tournament after coming into the tournament with an injury. Denis Zakaria is also available agains after overcoming a thigh injury.
Switzerland: Sommer – Widmer, Schar, Akanji, Rodriguez – Xhaka, Freuler, Aebischer – Shaqiri, Ndoye, Embolo
Germany: Neuer – Kimmich, Tah, Koch, Mittelstadt – Andrich, Kroos – Musiala, Gundogan, Wirtz – Fullkrug
Anything else catch the eye?
Although Germany have conceded just one goal in the tournament so far, Hungary did have a couple of good openings against them. In general, clean sheets are a rarity for them – they'd kept just two in their last 14 matches before Euro 2024. Both teams to score is priced at 8/11 with Betfred.
