Sporting Lisbon vs Tottenham Hotspur
UEFA Champions League, KO: 17:45 Sep 13, 2022, Estadio Jose AlvaladeTWO in-form clubs meet on Tuesday in Portugal when Sporting Lisbon host Tottenham Hotspur in the second round of the group stages of the Champions League.
Both Sporting and Spurs got off to excellent starts in their group. The London side left it late before getting the better of a Marseille team who had to play with almost the entire second half with only ten men.
But Spurs have made a really encouraging unbeaten start to the league season and hopes are high in North London that they can launch a meaningful title challenge this term.
They face a real challenge though in the Portuguese capital against an improving Sporting side managed by Ruben Amorim, who was linked with the Chelsea job before Graham Potter got it.
They served notice of what to expect in the opening game when they went to the home of the Europa League winners Eintracht Frankfurt and wiped the floor with them in a 3-0 win.
Last month, they seemed to be in crisis after a heavy defeat at Porto before a shock loss at home to Chaves. But they have recovered by beating Estoril, Eintracht and weekend opposition Portimonense comfortably without conceding a goal.
How the bookies view it
Tottenham Hotspur are hovering either side of the evens mark depending on who you invest with, but you can get a touch of 21/20 with 10Bet.
Sporting Lisbon can be backed at 3/1 with Boylesports and the draw is 11/4 with UniBet.
Recent head to heads
The clubs have never met in a competitive match.
Players to watch
With Spurs having a weekend rest for obvious reasons, there should be no reasons for any of their stars to be rotated. Harry Kane is the obvious choice to inflict the damage in Lisbon, although to score prices are not yet up at the time of writing.
An intriguing sidenote here is the inclusion of English striker Marcus Edwards who was at Spurs as a kid until they released him three years ago. He signed for Vitoria Guimares and was so good there that Sporting snapped him up.
He netted the opener against Eintracht and has already scored three goals this season.
Anything else catch the eye?
There's no doubt Sporting are a young, improving side, but this Spurs side looks made of stern stuff this season and should be backed for the win.
Manchester City came here last season and romped to a 5-0 win. While no one is suggesting Spurs will repeat that, it given an indication of the gulf between English and Portuguese football.
However, Sporting won't sit bak and can certainly score against a Spurs defence who have conceded goals to Southampton, Fulham, West Ham and Chelsea this season, so just in case Spurs don't get the job done, the 10/13 from SBK looks surprisingly generous for both teams to score.
