Rangers vs Young Boys

, KO: 20:00 Dec 12, 2019, Ibrox
Young Boys

IT would be heart-breaking for Rangers if Young Boys ended their Europa League dream at Ibrox, having put so much into their campaign.

But as the Ibrox side found out to their cost on Sunday at Hampden, sometimes you don't get what you deserve.

Steven Gerrard's men pummelled Celtic in the Betfred Cup Final but somehow ended up losing 1-0 against a side who played most of the second half with 10 men.

I thought that final would end in a 1-1 draw, with Alfredo Morelos finally breaking his duck in Old Firm derbies.

But the Colombian missed a hatful of chances to take it to extra time, most notably a penalty as heroic Hoops keeper Fraser Forster won their personal duel hands down.

How Rangers recover from the psychological blow of that crushing defeat will be key to their whole season and they can't allow the disappointment to linger when Young Boys come calling.

A point would be enough to take Gerrard's men into the last 32 but they will need to repeat their Ibrox performances against Feyenoord and Porto to avoid crashing out.

How the bookies view it

Rangers have been excellent at home in Europe under Gerrard and have yet to lose, which is why they are a best 89/100 with Marathonbet.

A draw would be enough for the Ibrox men and it's 3/1 with Betfred while a win for Young Boys is 7/2 with Sportingbet.

It all depends on how Rangers react to that Hampden sickener but with a packed Ibrox behind them I think they will manage to get through.

The draw is tempting at 3/1 but instead I'll go for a Rangers win with both teams to score, which is 11/4 with Betfred.

Gerrard's side kept clean sheets in the wins over Porto and Feyenoord but continue to look suspect at the back, with Celtic scoring from their only shot on target at Hampden.

Head to head

The Swiss side came out on top at home earlier in the group, coming from behind after Morelos' opener to win thanks to a couple of blunders from Rangers skipper James Tavernier (below).

The sides had never met before in European competition before that clash at the Wankdorf Stadium.

Form guide

The weekend defeat by Celtic ended a 12-game unbeaten run that stretched all the way back to that loss to Young Boys in Switzerland. Eight of those matches were victories so Rangers are in decent form.

Young Boys have been on a much worse run, losing three of their last seven matches. The lost 2-1 to Porto in their last Euro match then followed it up with a 3-0 loss at Basel but got back to winning ways at the weekend, beating Lucerne 1-0.

Thriller or chiller?

This could be a bit cagey, given Rangers know a point is enough to take them through. There have been under 2.5 goals in both previous Group G games at Ibrox so a repeat could come up at 109/100 with Marathonbet.

But Young Boys know a point isn't enough for them so they will have to commit players forward at some point and leave spaces at the back. Over 2.5 strikes is 13/15 with SportNation and I'll be on that, as well as Rangers to score in each half, which is 9/5 with William Hill.

Players to watch

I've tipped Morelos (below) to score in the last three European games and the Colombian has delivered each time. I was surprised to see him as big as 7/4 to score last time out at Feyenoord, given his hot streak in the tournament.

He netted twice that night to take his Europa League tally this season to 13 but the bookies amazingly still don't have Morelos at odds-on here in the anytime scorer market. He's 5/4 with Unibet and I suggest you snap that up, even though he left his shooting boots at home against Celtic.

Christian Fassnacht punished Rangers with a last-minute winner in Bern and was also on target against Porto in their last Europa League game. He looks Young Boys' best bet for a goal here and is 4/1 with Paddy Power to net at any time.

Anything else catch the eye?

The card markets offer good value, especially in midfield where it could become a bit of a battle. My tip of Glen Kamara to be booked came up at 4/1 against Feyenoord and the Finn is even bigger at 9/2 with William Hill for a card here.

Young Swiss defender Cedric Zesiger found Morelos difficult to handle in Bern and picked up a booking that night. He's 2/1 with Bet365 for another card in the Ibrox return and that looks a good option.
