I WAS DELIGHTED to see Addeybb bolt up in the last race yesterday to give us a nice winner on day one of the Royal Ascot meeting and today I’m getting ambitious with all of my picks being available at double figure prices.
It feels to me like a day for outsiders and I’m looking to get all of the favourites beaten. Plenty of bookmakers are offering special deals on place terms so shop around and get the best offers if you can. I’m not keen on the favourites so hopefully we can get one or two nice winners.
Royal Ascot 2.30
First up is RAFFLE PRIZE for Mark Johnston and Frankie Dettori in the 2.30pm. This is a wide open race with limited form to go on but Raffle Prize impressed me at Chester and if he can handle the different type of course here at Ascot he has a nice chance at a big price.
Royal Ascot 3.05
My next selection is EMINENT AUTHORITY in the 3.05pm ridden by Jamie Spencer for trainer Joseph O’Brien. He looks to be an out and out stayer and connections say that he doesn’t show much at home but comes to life on the racecourse. I think this longer test today will suit him and Spencer is the right man to produce him at just the right moment. Another one who looks too big a price at 10-1.
Royal Ascot 3.40
ZABEEL PRINCE is a horse who really has been a late developer, leaving his best performances for this season when he is a six year old. His form this season is rock solid and I can definitely see him involved at the finish in the 3.40pm whilst there are question marks over all three of the horses shorter than him in the betting.
Royal Ascot 4.20
I am torn between two horses in the 4.20pm and I have decided that I am going to have a bit on both of them given that they are both double figure prices. The two William Haggas trained runners PRETTY BABY and MOVE SWIFTLY have different profiles but both hold appeal in a wide open race.
Pretty Baby looks a potential class act and has no problem with the ground whilst Move Swiftly has the imperious Danny Tudhope on board and improved all the way through last season and should really have won at Lingfield over the winter. Both will stay the trip no problem and I can see them outrunning their prices in what is admittedly a competitive race.
Royal Ascot 5.00
The 5.00pm again sees me copping out with 2 selections but one of them is 66-1 so hopefully you can cut me some slack. SETTLE FOR BAY is last year’s winner but was fabulous in winning the race and has no doubt been targeted to come back for another challenge.
He has to carry a bit more weight but I don’t see that as a major problem. The main concern I have is the ground perhaps being too soft for him but we are being nicely compensated for that with the big price so I’ll take my chances.
The other selection is SO BELOVED who comes with a bit of a health warning in that he hasn’t won for 2 years but he is a nice consistent sort and a place at 66-1 is as good as a win so with some firms paying 7 places, first time blinkers at the age of 9 and conditions that will suit him we can afford to have a pop and hope that Danny Tudhope can get him into the places with a classy ride.
No selections for me in the last race so that’s all for today. Good luck and enjoy the racing.
