THE Ryder Cup never fails to thrill but what happened on day one was as unexpected as it was exciting.

Europe didn't turn up in the morning and needed Tommy Fleetwood and Francesco Molinari to take the scalp of Tiger Woods and Patrick Reed to avoid a whitewash.

In the afternoon Thomas Bjorn's men completely turned it around to win the foursomes 4-0 for the first time in the history of the event.

No match went beyond the 15th hole and every game was won easily to give Europe a 5-3 overnight lead.

The day two fourballs have been announced and as luck would have it Fleetwood and Molinari, who picked up a second point in the afternoon romp, are up against Woods and Reed again. I'd give them a third point.

Elsewhere Rory McIlroy recovered well from a disastrous opening round and is now paired with Sergio Garcia against Brooks Koepka and Tony Finau in a real heavyweight contest.

Paul Casey and Tyrrell Hatton tackle Dustin Johnson and Rickie Fowler and you'd fancy the Americans.

And finally it's Jon Rahm and Ian Poulter against Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas who won one and lost one on Friday.

The big surprise is no outing for world No.2 Justin Rose but you can bet he'll be out first with Henrik Stenson in the afternoon after their day one demolition act.
