Alan Thomson’s Racing Tips: Arrow in on a winner

ARROWTOWN (4.45) looks the best bet on the card in what will be a gruelling 2m 1f test at Ayr.

Mick Easterby’s six-year-old arrives fresh from a victory in the 1m 4f Hambleton Cup on deep ground at Thirsk but, equally significantly, she stayed two miles strongly when pipped by October Storm at York last October. 

GUILDHALL (1.30) and FIVE AMARONES (2.00) have sound claims in both divisions of the 7f novice stakes. 

Ralph Beckett would have been delighted by Guildhall’s Sandown debut when third to Rajinsky. Runner-up Walkinthesand was an impressive winner on Wednesday, while fifth home Alrajaa ran an excellent race in defeat at Yarmouth on the same day. 

Five Amarones was a surprise winner of a similar event at Thirsk, bolting up by more than four lengths. There didn’t appear any fluke about the result and his experience will count for plenty in these searching conditions. 

The rest of the card on day two is very tricky but LIGHTNING ATTACK (2.30) is worth an interest in the 6f nursery. Richard Fahey and Paul Hanagan have enjoyed plenty of success over the years at this meeting and Lightning Attack is due to go up 4lb in future following his close second to Prince Des Sables at Hamilton. Cheek-pieces are applied for the first time. 

Dream Of Honour’s third to Three Card Trick at York was a solid effort and he was narrowly beaten by Kolossus over course and distance last month on fast ground. Nothing separates the pair at these weights. 

With one eye on tomorrow’s feature race, the outcome of the William Hill Bronze Cup will interest many punters searching for pointers to the draw. MY AMIGO (4.10) emerges from stall five on the far side and Marjorie Fife has him in the form of his life. He scored at Newmarket last month before running third of 26 runners at the Curragh. 

Of those runners berthed on the stands’ side, Kenny The Captain is worth a saver. He found only Big Lachie too good at Donny last week and ran third to Naggers at this fixture in 2016. Kenny The Captain is closely matched with Yes You on Thirsk running and Iain Jardine’s sprinter is another to go in this ground. 

The Listed Harry Rosebery Stakes always attracts a useful field of young sprinters and LIFE OF RILEY (3.05) had Vintage Brut (fourth) and Deia Glory (eighth) behind when running fourth to Rumble Inthejungle at Goodwood. 

The 5f fillies’ sprint is another wide-open affair and MAGICAL DREAMER (3.35) beat Rebel Surge on soft at Goodwood in early June. James Fanshawe’s filly has a string of placed efforts on soft as well and comes here in terrific form, having easily justified favouritism at Chelmsford City last time. 

Beauty Filly did us a turn at Hamilton eight days ago and although the William Haggas-trained three-year-old has a bit to find on official ratings, she is on the upgrade. 

MAKE ME (5.20) handled the mud when chasing home Mearing at Carlisle and the winner has since gone in again at Chester. Irish challenger Rince Deireanach ran well on her first start for James Lambe at Leopardstown in July and she was a five lengths winner on heavy ground at Fairyhouse when trained by Jim Bolger. Paul Hanagan could be a significant booking.
