SOME serious racing at Goodwood could be the springboard to success at Newmarket’s impending three-day fixture and I’ll be disappointed if FRANKUUS (3.45) isn’t involved in the finish to the Listed contest.
Soft ground will hold no fears and Joe Fanning will have Frankuus in a prominent position straight from the off. His Haydock victory over Mount Logan came from the front and Goodwood suits his style of racing.
Another son of Frankel, Monarchs Glen, used to be a right tearaway but looked a reformed character at Sandown following a gelding operation. He gave winner Thundering Blue plenty to think about, despite racing wide and that horse is favourite for Saturday’s Cambridgeshire.
NOTICE (4.20) has been costly to follow but he’ll be sent off at decent odds following a disappointing fourth to Fire Jet over a longer trip at HQ.
His second to Cribbs Causeway at Salisbury was a much better effort, with the winner running so well on Saturday, and Notice had several of today’s rivals (Melinoe, St Marys, Renfrew Street and Fire Jet) behind when chasing home Mistress Quickly at Newbury in July.
ZZORO (3.25) doesn’t win too often but handled the mud when beating Interconnection at Newmarket back in May. Local trainer Amanda Perrett does well with her runners in handicaps here and the top weight has a definite chance in a weak-looking affair.
Heavy ground at Perth means I’ll be treading carefully but AHEAD OF THE CURVE (4.30) readily saw off Thorpe over a shorter trip on soft on a previous visit to the Scone track.
BODACIOUS NAME (3.25) makes his debut over hurdles for John Quinn, a trainer with a tall reputation when it comes to unearthing smart juveniles. Bodacious Name was a mudlark on the Flat at a modest level up to two miles and should be able to cope with conditions.
I’ll be getting involved in the middle-distance handicaps at Kempton this evening but earlier on the card PSYCHOTIC (7.40) is worth mentioning in the median auction maiden.
A pretty moderate assortment go to post and Psychotic has shown promise on both starts. Jim Crowley is a good booking and stall one is perfect. Market leader Cape To Cuba finished a tailed off last of four at Thirsk (heavy) and runner-up Ambrosia looked a right rag when flopping at Catterick last week.
