While many punters naturally gravitate towards backing a winner, betting on a draw can be a smart and rewarding alternative.

This is because bookmakers typically assign bigger odds to stalemates, which occur less often than victories for either team.

With that in mind, let’s examine this weekend’s fixtures and identify the games where draw outcomes present the best value.

Galway United vs Sligo Rovers (Saturday, 17:00)

Galway United and Sligo Rovers meet in the Irish Premier Division on Saturday evening in what has all the ingredients of a closely contested encounter. Both sides head into this clash in poor form and remain firmly embroiled in the relegation battle, so a cagey affair could well be on the cards at Eamonn Deacy Park.

Both teams have been losing games at an alarming rate in recent weeks, and there may come a stage where they're each content to settle for a point to halt their respective slides. Four of Galway's six league draws this season have finished 1-1, and it would come as little surprise if Saturday's showdown with Sligo ends in the same scoreline.

Argentina vs Switzerland (Sunday, 02:00)

Argentina and Switzerland's World Cup quarter-final clash in the early hours of Sunday morning could prove to be much closer than the bookmakers' odds suggest.

Argentina have already been made to work hard in the knockout rounds. Lionel Scaloni's side were taken to extra time by Cape Verde before coming agonisingly close to requiring an additional 30 minutes against Egypt. Enzo Fernandez's late winner ultimately spared them from extra time and potentially penalties in the previous round, but they now face what could prove to be an even sterner examination against a Switzerland side renowned for being a tough nut to crack.

Murat Yakin's men have already drawn two of their five matches at this summer's World Cup, with their latest stalemate against Colombia going the distance, and another all square affair could be on the cards in Kansas.

Brommapojkarna vs Sirius (Sunday, 15:30)

The draw looks the value play when Brommapojkarna host Sirius in the Swedish Allsvenskan on Sunday afternoon.

The home side head into the contest unbeaten in four matches, while table-toppers Sirius are still yet to suffer defeat this season. That said, Brommapojkarna have shared the spoils in each of their last two league outings, making another stalemate here an attractive proposition.

The case is further strengthened by the fact Sirius arrive on the back of a thrilling 4-4 draw with Mjallby last time out.
