REMEMBER Terry Gibson? Well, we've signed him and while he won't be kicking a football he'll be looking into his crystal ball and bringing us his best Spanish tips every week.
The ex-Spurs, Coventry and Manchester United striker is probably best remembered for his time as part of the infamous Wimbledon Crazy Gang side of the late 80s and early 90s. Now an expert in all things La Liga he works as a pundit and co-commentator on Sky Sports’ Spanish football coverage and is a contributor to unibet.
Here he previews the Friday night game.
Levante v Sevilla (Fri 8pm)
This is a huge game to kick off proceedings on what should be a decisive weekend in La Liga. This game involves one team who if they win pretty much ensure survival and the other team involved in the race for the possible last remaining place in next season’s Europa League.
Levante are and have been involved in the relegation battle for some while now but having made a managerial change they are now almost safe. Paco Lopez took over from Juan Muniz just seven games ago and what an impact he has made.
Lopez has taken 16 points in his seven matches. It’s five wins, one draw and one defeat and that was away at Atletico Madrid. They were worthy 3-1 victors on Monday evening away at Athletic Bilbao and they are playing with real confidence and showing genuine quality.
Their position is this: They are nine ahead of Deportivo la Coruńa with four games to play. The teams drew 2-2 on both occasions this season so if they finish level on points it will go down to goal difference and Levante are 16 goals better off in that department.
A win here and Levante will be safe and they can thoroughly enjoy the weekend whilst watching Deportivo take on Barcelona! They face a Sevilla team who are in crisis after the 5-0 drubbing in last week’s Copa del Rey final against Barcelona.
This week they sacked the Sporting Director and told the manager Vincenzo Montella that he is in charge for the time being! It’s so important that Sevilla regain form, they have been chased down by a number of teams including the in-form Getafe and face a real struggle to qualify for next season’s competition.
However, it is eight games without a win in all competitions and six in La Liga so they need to turn it around quickly. At the moment they are level with Getafe on 48 points who have played a game more and I have Getafe winning three of their final four; Sevilla’s game in hand is at home to Real Madrid.
I’m going to go for the in-form home team to win another game especially if they replicate the form shown on Monday night. I’m predicting a 1-0 win for Levante with Emanuel Boateng getting the winning goal and keeping them in the division for next season.
n both occasions this season so if they finish level on points it will go down to goal difference and Levante are 16 goals better off in that department.
