Southampton vs Tottenham

, KO: 12:00 Sep 20, 2020, St Mary's Stadium
Tottenham

BOTH Southampton and Tottenham will be desperate to get off the mark when they meet at St Mary's on Sunday afternoon.

The Saints fell to a 1-0 defeat at Selhurst Park last Saturday and Spurs lost by the same scoreline the following day when entertaining Everton.

A  near-full strength Southampton side were then dumped out of the Carabao Cup by Championship outfit Brentford in midweek.

Ralph Hasenhuttl cut a frustrated figure following that setback and he will be expecting a response when Spurs pitch up at St Mary's on Sunday.

Jose Mourinho, meanwhile, blasted his players following a lacklustre display against Everton and the self proclaimed “Special One” is now pushing to add to his squad with both Gareth Bale and Sergio Regulion reportedly set to check in at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Having said that, Mourinho's men bounced back from their opening day defeat with a 2-1 win over Lokomotiv Plovdiv on Thursday night, however, Spurs can expect a more stern test on the south coast on Sunday lunchtime.

Outright Betting

Southampton have avoided defeat in each of their last four home matches with Tottenham and a Saints success on Sunday is priced up at 9/4 with Unibet, while a share of the spoils pays 12/5 with the same firm.

Tottenham, despite failing to win 15 of their 19 Premier League road trips last season, come into this contest as slight favourites at a best 11/8 with Bet 365.

Betting Angles

Goals tend to flow in this fixture – 10 of the last 11 meetings have seen both teams oblige –  and I fancy that to be the case yet again at St Mary's on Sunday.

Both teams made the net bulge in 25 of Tottenham's 38 Premier League matches this season – the highest total across the division – and the Saints weren't far behind with 23 of their tussles seeing both sides get on the scoresheet.

It's also worth noting that Mourinho's leaky defence managed just eight shutouts across the entire 2019/20 season, while Southampton managed just one more clean sheet than that of their guests.

What's more, both sides have very capable forward lines and that coupled with their respective ropey rearguards has me attracted to the 4/5 on offer with William Hill for both teams to score on Sunday.

Whether or not both sides notch remains to be seen, however, I'm also going to delve into Bet 365's Bet Builder feature with the view to backing over one match goal and both teams to pick up at least one card.

The above-mentioned Bet Builder will give us a nice looking 5/6 shot with Bet 365, not to mention it's a combination that clicked during the 3-2 FA Cup thriller between these two back in February.

I'm also mindful of the fact that Tottenham will be faced with a very quick turnaround here having contested an energy-sapping Europa League qualifier on Thursday night in Bulgaria – and that only adds to the appeal of siding with goals at St Mary's.

Furthermore, both sets of players could feel like they have a point to prove so I'm happy to back each side to collect at least one card in what should be an evenly-matched contest.

This match between Southampton and Tottenham will be played on Sep 20, 2020 and kick off at 12:00. Check below for our tipsters best Southampton vs Tottenham prediction. You may also visit our dedicated betting previews section for the most up to date previews.
