Rangers vs Feyenoord

, KO: 20:00 Sep 19, 2019, Ibrox
Feyenoord

There will be a poignant atmosphere inside Ibrox on Thursday night when fans pay tribute to former Rangers captain Fernando Ricksen.

The world of football is mourning the death of Dutchman Ricksen – who won 12 caps for his country – and it's rather fitting that Rangers welcome Dutch opposition to Glasgow on a night when Ricksen will be remembered.

The Eredivisie side in question is Feyenoord, who arrive in Govan after being drawn in Group G of the Europa League alongside Porto, Young Boys and opening night opponents Rangers.

After entering the Europa League in the first-qualifying round way back in July, the Gers had to slog it out to reach the group-stages, and although Steven Gerrard's remit would have been to oversee a return to this stage of the competition, the Liverpool legend has stated that his side are not in this section to make up the numbers and that Rangers are targeting three points on Thursday night.

The bookmakers believe the Teddy Bears can do just that with a home win priced at 6/5 (William Hill), while Feyenoord are odds-against at 11/5 (William Hill) and a share of the spoils is available at 12/5 (William Hill) with the same firm.

Jaap Stam's side look slightly overpriced to take something away from this tussle given the fact they are entering this encounter off the back of four consecutive victories – firing in 10 goals in the process.

What's more, Rangers defence looked vulnerable during last weekend's 3-1 home win against Livingston, with only the woodwork and goalkeeper Allan McGregor preventing the Lions from re-taking the lead at Ibrox, before the Gers grabbed two goals in the final 19 minutes to seal all three points.

Feyenoord's attack, which includes dangerous duo Luciano Narsingh and Steven Begrhuis, won't be so wasteful for a Dutch side who hit Hapoel Be'er-Sheva for six over two-legs in the Europa League play-off round.

However, the Rotterdam outfit shipped two goals at home to Den Haag on Sunday, and given that Rangers have scored in every home game bar one this season, value could lie in backing both teams to score at 17/20 (William Hill)

In considering who may get amongst the goals, the aforementioned Berghuis is an enticing 16/5 (PaddyPower) to add to his five goals in eight appearances this term.

As for the home side, Alfredo Morelos will attract plenty of punters at 7/5 (BetVictor) in the anytime goalscorer market – six of the Colombian's' 11 goals this season have come at Ibrox on European nights.

It may also be worth dipping into the card markets for what is expected to be an open and lively contest – as tends to be the case when a team from the Eredivisie is involved.

Consequently, both backlines' could be in for a busy night, as could Spanish referee Antonio Miguel Mateu Lahoz who averaged five cards per-game in all competitions last season.

Furthermore, the Spaniard notably took nine names during his one and only European assignment to date this season when officiating Ajax's Champions League qualifier with Apoel Nicosia.

There are several candidates to consider for a card in this clash, perhaps none more so than Nikola Katic who is an eye-catching 5/1 (Bet 365) to be booked – the young Croatian centre-half has been cautioned in four of his last six outings for the Scottish giants.

Rangers will be roared on by a raucous home support under the lights of a packed out Ibrox, but whether or not such backing can inspire the Blues to victory against free-scoring Feyenoord is another matter.

Gerrard's Gers are capable of ending the Dutch teams nine game unbeaten start to the season, however I remain conscious of the fact that the hosts have conceded three times in their last two outings on home turf.

Stam's men are averaging over two goals per-game this season and they will enter the Bears backyard believing they can make the net bulge.

As such, this is a tough one to call, however value could lie in the goals markets and backing over 2.5 goals at 11/10 (BetVictor) could be worth considering in what should be an enthralling encounter on an emotional evening in Glasgow.
