QUEEN'S PARK welcome Airdrie to their Firhill home for the season after being narrowly defeated by Premiership side Motherwell in the Premier Sports Cup in midweek.
The ambitious former amateurs won their opening game against Championship side Queen of the South in the competition and followed that up with that loss to Well. Both games finished 1-0 either way.
Airdrie opened their campaign with a pretty disappointing 1-1 draw with League Two outfit Annan Athletic in midweek where they even lost on penalties to deny them an extra point.
With the Spiders boasting some big names in their squad and under new management in Laurie Ellis, they are expected to be one of the challengers for the League One title this season, with Airdrie also in the league.
Airdrie have brought in 12 new players for the season ahead including the likes of Dylan Easton, Adam Frizzell, Salim Kouider-Aissa and Rhys McCabe.
Queen's Park have opted for a more low-key approach to the season, having brought in six new players – none of whom could be regarded as marquee signings.
How the bookies view it
The hosts are the favourites among bookies which is to be expected. The Glasgow side are 11/8 to get the win, with the Diamonds narrow outsiders at 8/5. The draw is 23/10.
Recent head to heads
The sides last met in the League Cup two years ago and it finished in a 2-2 draw, with footage unavailable for it. Airdrie are actually unbeaten in the past six meetings between the teams.
Players to watch
Simon Murray has probably been Queen's Park's most eye-catching signing since their cash injection from Lord Willie Haughey. The former Hibs and Dundee United star struggled for full fitness last season, but still managed six goals in six starts last term. Guilty of missing some glaring opportunities, he's at least in the right place to get them.
Dylan Easton has always been a player with bags of skills and tricks and opted to move on from Kelty Hearts, who he helped win the Lowland League last season, to a return to a bigger club when he moved to Airdre. He netted 17 goals last season and the former Livingston and St Johnstone player is usually a goal threat.
Anything else catch the eye?
Queen's Park have opted for more of the same from last season's solid campaign – defensively they were excellent, conceding only 13 league goals all season albeit in League Two.
This could easily be another low goalscoring encounter in Maryhill and the 9/10 with bet365 for under 2.5 goals appeals. In fact, for a lively outsider, another 1-0 scoreline, in favour of the hosts at 8/1 appeals.
And the home side to win at 11/8 looks solid too.
