Liverpool vs Chelsea

, KO: 20:00 Aug 14, 2019, Vodafone Park
Chelsea

TEN weeks on from lifting the Champions League trophy Liverpool return to the city where they famously captured their fifth European crown 14 years ago.

The Vodafone Park in Istanbul is the venue for this years UEFA Super Cup where Liverpool will clash with familiar foes in the shape of Europa League winners Chelsea.

European successes generate more fixtures and as a consequence both of these Premier League rivals are pursuing further honours in Turkey,

The bookmakers believe that Liverpool will take some stopping with Jurgen Klopp's side odds-on at 8/13 (Bet 365) to triumph in 90 minutes.

Yet, the last time Liverpool lifted silverware in this city they famously fought back from being 3-0 down at the interval before prevailing on penalties and if you fancy a grandstand finish to this final then the draw is on offer at 3/1 (Ladbrokes)

Chelsea meanwhile flew out to Istanbul after a 4-0 thumping at Old Trafford on Sunday and the manner of that result and performance is perhaps reflected in the Blues being priced at 5/1 (Bet 365) to win the Super Cup in normal time.

Such lofty odds for the Londoners doesn't come as a surprise after Chelsea were mauled by Manchester United in what turned out to be a difficult opening day in the dugout for new Blues boss Frank Lampard.

Lampard's side looked threatening in the early stages before capitulating in the second half and as such the Chelsea legend may look to make changes to his starting 11 with the likes of Willian and Olivier Giroud pushing for a start at the Vodafone Park.

Whether or not Chelsea mix it up remains to be seen but regardless of what approach Lampard takes the Blues will do well to avoid a repeat of Sundays beating when they come up against a superior Liverpool side.

The Reds began their pursuit of the Premier League last Friday night at Anfield by romping to a 4-1 win over newly-promoted Norwich City – however the Merseysiders victory was marred by an injury to goalkeeper Alisson who is set to be out of action for the next few weeks.

New recruit Adrian has big gloves to fill between the sticks and the Spaniard conceded a goal against the Canaries last time out in a match which seen both teams score .

A repeat of that outcome in Istanbul is available at 4/6 (William Hill) and although goalmouth action is likely at both ends, those odds don't appeal as it is unclear who will get goals for this Chelsea side following talisman Eden Hazard's move to Real Madrid.

Liverpool on the other hand almost always find the back of the net on account of possessing one of the most potent attacking trios in world football.

After his African Cup of Nations exploits Sadio Mane could return to the Liverpool line-up alongside Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah.

Salah got up and running for the season against Norwich and is 15/4 (Betway) favourite to score the opener in the Super Cup final.

The former Chelsea winger scored a wonder-goal against the Blues back in in April – one of 27 racked up in 52 appearances last season – and the Egyptian is an enticing 5/4 (Ladbrokes) to score anytime on Wednesday night.

What's more the King of the Kop tends to turn up on big occasions and he could be on penalty duty should one be awarded (9/4 William Hill) and it was Salah of course who scored from the spot in last seasons Champions League final.

In conjunction with that the 8/11 (Boylesports) on offer for Salah to register two or more shots on target points towards profit against a Chelsea defence that was ripped apart by the Red Devils at the weekend.

Even this early into his reign Lampard can ill-afford another annihilation and even though Chelsea have only lost two of their last 11 cup clashes with the Reds it's difficult to forecast anything other than Liverpool lifting the Super Cup.

Jurgen Klopp's side are hot-favourites to bring the trophy home at 8/13 (Bet 365) but an alternative angle to consider is combing a Liverpool win and over 1.5 goals at 10/11 (Bet 365)
