Lithuania vs Malta

, KO: 17:00 , Darius and Girenas Stadium
Malta

Lithuania and Malta have both made slow starts to World Cup qualifying and will be looking to get a first victory under their belts when they face off in Kaunas.

It looked like these nations would be scrapping it out to avoid finishing bottom of Group G when the draw pitted them against the Netherlands, Poland and Finland.

That's exactly how it has panned out so far, with Malta collecting just one point from their four games and Lithuania one point and one place above them, having played a game fewer.

The Maltese were crushed 8-0 in Amsterdam in their last outing, bringing up three bets for Slips Tips, so they will be out to restore some pride in Kaunas.

Lithuania could only draw 0-0 in Malta earlier in the group but they've been pretty competitive, having drawn with Finland and run Poland close before losing 1-0.

Now they'll be looking to get a first victory on the board in front of a home crowd to make amends for that Maltese stalemate.

How the bookies view it: Lithuania decent value

I'm surprised to see Lithuania as big as evens with BoyleSports for a win and that looks good value with home advantage. Another stalemate pays 19/10 while Malta are 3/1 outsiders.

Head to head: Not much in it

That 0-0 draw back in June was the second successive stalemate between these nations. The overall head to head is pretty close, with three Lithuania wins, two Malta victories and three draws.

Players to watch: Narius can make up for lost time

Nauris Petkevicius is back in the Lithuania squad for the first time in three years and has been playing well at club level for Suduva. He could be worth a punt once the bookies price up a market for anytime scorer.

St-Etienne's Irvin Cardona is set for a Malta debut after pledging his international future to them. The former French youth international looks their best bet for a goal in Kaunas.

Probable line-ups

Lithuania are without some key players as Kipras Kazukolovas, Matas Vareika, Pijus Sirvysm Vykintas Slivka and Armandas Kucys are all missing.

In addition to Cardona, Malta could also hand a debut to Auckland's Jake Brimmer. Captain Matthew Guillaumier is banned but Ilyas Chouaref returns from suspension.

Lithuania: Gertmonas, Upstas, Lasickas, Utkus, Tutyskinas, Ginetis, Dolzinkov, Golubikas, Vorobjovas, Jankuaskas, Petkevicius.

Malta: Bonello, Muscat, Pepe, Camenzuli, Borg, Chouaref, Satariano, Brimmer, Cardona, P Mbong, J Mbong.

Anything else catch the eye?

Lithuania scored twice against a superior Finland side in their last home qualifier so there could be some value in backing them for over 1.5 strikes in this one at 6/4 with BoyleSports.

Malta may have shut them out in the last meeting but they shipped eight goals to the Dutch and that suggests their defence is vulnerable.

We didn't see a lot of corners when these sides last faced off, with each side winning just two. That makes under 8.5 flag kicks worth a punt here at 10/11. I'd imagine Lithuania will have most of the pressure at home so I'm also backing them at -1.5 in the corner handicap at 11/10
