Lazio will be aiming to maintain their push for a top six finish and a place in Europe as they host Venezia in a Monday night Serie A fixture. While the capital club have not been consistent this season, they are still expected to be too strong for the troubled visitors.
There are no further distractions for Lazio, who have now crashed out of all the other competitions. Sitting just one point off domestic rivals Roma in sixth, their task now is to build some consistency and push for the European places.
Lazio have shown some good form in recent weeks and head into Monday’s clash with just one defeat in their last seven Serie A matches. They have claimed four wins in that run, including a 3-0 win at Cagliari last time out with Ciro Immobile, Luis Alberto and Felipe Anderson getting the goals.
Led by the impressive Immobile, who has 20 Serie A goals this season, Lazio are among the leading scorers in the topflight. However, their open style often leaves them exposed at the back and Maurizio Sarri’s men have kept just one clean sheet in their last five matches across all competitions.
While Lazio are pushing for a European finish, Venezia are battling at the opposite end of the table. Paolo Zanetti’s men have spent much of the campaign in the relegation zone and need a swift upturn in results to boost their survival quest.
It is not all doom and gloom for Venezia who sit just three points from safety and could climb out of the bottom three if results go their way this weekend. However, they have shown little fight in recent weeks and have lost their last two matches, including a 4-1 home defeat to Venezia in their previous fixture.
Venezia also have a poor record on their travels and have suffered three defeats in their last four away matches. Their previous fixture on the road finished in a 3-1 defeat to Verona.
How the bookies view it
Lazio are considered overwhelming favourites among the bookies at 7/20 with William Hill while a victory for Venezia is valued at 10/1 by BetVictor. A draw is set at odds of 9/2 by SBK.
Recent head to head
Lazio are unbeaten in the last four meetings with Venezia, claiming three wins in that run. The capital club triumphed 3-1 in the reverse fixture back in December.
Players to watch
While Lazio are not expected to win Serie A, Ciro Immobile is in the running to win the golden boot for the third time in his career. The striker has 20 goals already this season and could be backed to improve that tally at 8/13 with Sport Nation.
Venezia do not have anyone as prolific as Immobile but will still be looking to take advantage of Lazio’s vulnerable backline. Their biggest attacking threat is Thomas Henry, who has scored in two of his last three matches and is priced at 19/5 by Betfred to find the net on Monday.
Anything else catch the eye?
Lazio have been involved in a few high scoring encounters this season like the reverse fixture which produced over 3.5 goals. A similar outcome is priced at 6/4 with BetVictor. The capital club’s leaky defence means both teams are likely to score at 29/20 with bet365.
12 of Immobile’s 20 goals this season have been the opener and the striker could be tipped to score first on Monday at 39/19 with SBK. Just like in the reverse fixture, Lazio are expected to claim a comfortable victory and could be backed in the -1 handicap market at 10/11 with BoyleSports.
