There are three crucial fixtures this midweek in the ever competitive Scottish Championship, one of which is the rearranged Highland derby that was washed out last month.
Remarkably, this will be the sixth meeting between the sides this season following a Scottish Cup double header in February. However, if the recent cup clashes, as well as league meetings from this season are anything to go by then there should be no shortage of action at the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium.
Buoyed from booking a Scottish Cup semi final date at Hampden, Caley have since gone on an impressive four game unbeaten run domestically having taken 10 points from the last 12 on offer to them. Aaron Doran has scored in three of those four outings and the in-form Irishman could be worth backing to find the net again on Tuesday night at 3/1 (Bet 365).
Although the Caley Jags can look forward to a trip to the National Stadium on Saturday week, John Robertson will be keen for his side to solidify their place in the top four, which until recently they had dropped out of. In doing so Inverness will be hoping that they can improve upon their sluggish showing against Falkirk on Saturday and deliver a more inspired performance at home against their title chasing local rivals.
This derby fixture was initially scheduled for the 15th March at which point the Staggies were a comfortable 11 points clear at the top of the table and seemingly coasting towards the title. Since then however County’s lead at the summit has been dramatically trimmed to just two points.
After Saturday’s shock defeat at Alloa this Highland derby now has added significance for the visitors as it marks the first of their two games in hand over title chasing Dundee Utd.
Undeterred by their worrying slump in the league, County recently enjoyed a joyful trip to the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium which seen them lift silverware as they triumphed in the Irn Bru Cup. The league leaders will now be keen to recapture that form and in doing so reignite their quest of bouncing back to the top flight at the first time of asking.
Despite their impressive season to date the Dingwall side have only kept two clean sheets in their last 15 games in all competitions. After a stalemate in their opening league meeting both Caley and County have played out three 2-2 draws this season as well as a 2-1 so there should be goals aplenty in the Highlands. With this in mind back both teams to score at 8/11 (McBookie).
In terms of separating the sides, expect another close encounter in which a score draw could well be the outcome once more. Although County top the table I do not expect them to head back to Dingwall with all three points.
Even though Inverness have failed to beat their neighbours in 90 minutes in five attempts this season, I suspect that the momentum of Caley’s recent results will see them take something from this game and dent their rivals title bid into the bargain.
