Cambridge United travel to Cressing Road on Tuesday for a behind closed doors friendly against Braintree Town. With no supporters, no television coverage and probable heavy rotation, the emphasis could well be on team selection and preseason progress rather than finding a betting angle.
Neil Harris begins his second season back in League One after guiding Cambridge United to automatic promotion with a third place finish on 82 points. The underlying numbers fully supported that success, with Cambridge averaging 1.67 xG while conceding only 0.74 xGA in home league matches.
Their preseason began with a 3-1 victory over Cambridge City for the second consecutive summer, and this fixture continues a carefully planned schedule against lower league opposition.
Braintree Town head into the new season following relegation from the National League after finishing second from bottom with 36 points. Their numbers reflected those struggles, averaging only 1.27 xG while conceding 1.69 xGA at home.
Steve Pitt remains in charge after deciding to stay following relegation, but preparations have been complicated by a transfer embargo that has limited recruitment, while several players from last season's squad have departed on loan. New assistant Tom Austin and goalkeeping coach Stefan Robson are among the changes behind the scenes.
Cambridge again look set to rotate heavily. Neil Harris used two completely different teams against Cambridge City, giving opportunities to new signing Isaac Heath, academy players and trialists alongside experienced first team members. A similar approach would make sense in another low profile preseason fixture.
How the bookies view it
At the time of writing there are no odds available for this fixture.
Head to head: No recent meetings
There is little competitive history between these clubs, with the two sides having spent most of their recent history at different levels of the English pyramid.
Player to watch: Isaac Heath
Isaac Heath made an immediate impression during the victory over Cambridge City and looks one of the most interesting players to follow throughout preseason. His direct running and willingness to attack defenders gave Cambridge a constant threat from the left flank.
He arrived permanently from Everton after winning the club's Under 21 Player of the Season award in 2024-25 and already has a full League Two season behind him following a successful loan spell at Accrington Stanley.
He made 30 league appearances, scoring four goals and providing four assists while collecting three separate Young Player of the Season awards. Most of those appearances came in defensive midfield, making his advanced role under Neil Harris an intriguing tactical change worth monitoring.
Predicted line ups
Cambridge United (4-3-3): Eastwood; Bradshaw, Watts, Bennett, McConnell; McLoughlin, Mpanzu, Heath; Yakubu, Appere, Lavery.
Braintree Town (4-3-3): Gray; Francis-Clarke, Djadja, Goredema, Pinnington; Lewis, Swann, Bolovan; Senior, Blackwell, Matthews.
Anything else catch the eye?
Without a betting market this fixture becomes more about assessing squad depth than predicting a result. Cambridge arrive with a clear advantage in both quality and preparation. Their promotion campaign was backed up by strong underlying numbers, and even a heavily rotated side demonstrated enough depth to beat Cambridge City comfortably in their opening friendly.
Braintree face a more difficult summer. Relegation, a transfer embargo and a reduced squad have left Steve Pitt with fewer options than he had last season, while this match is likely to be used primarily to assess fitness and give players valuable minutes.
If a market becomes available before kick off, Cambridge United would be the obvious selection. The gap in league quality is significant, Cambridge's underlying data remains strong, and Braintree's current squad looks weaker than the group that was relegated. Even so, this is still a closed doors friendly where extensive substitutions and limited information make confidence difficult to justify.
My lean would be Cambridge United to win, but this is a fixture to monitor rather than one to approach aggressively.
