Burnley vs Cardiff City

, KO: 19:45 , Turf Moor
Cardiff City

Burnley will play host to Cardiff Cardiff City in an EFL Cup third round tie at Turf Moor on Tuesday night.

The hosts progressed to this stage of the competition thanks to a last-gasp 2-1 win over Derby County, while the visitors have seen off both Swindon and Cheltenham to set up this tie.

Scott Parker’s side snapped a two-game losing run in the Premier League on Saturday by coming from behind to claim a 1-1 draw when hosting Nottingham Forest.

The Clarets will now look to reach the fourth round of the Carabao Cup for the sixth time across the last eight seasons by overcoming Cardiff this midweek.

The Bluebirds suffered their first defeat of the season in English League One when crashing to a 3-1 loss at home to Bradford on Saturday.

Brian Barry-Murphy and his players have little time to feel sorry for themselves in the wake of that defeat as they face a quick turnaround ahead of this week’s trip to Lancashire.

How the bookies view it: Burnley to march on

Given that the pair are separated by two divisions, it’s no surprise to see Burnley as short-priced 11/20 favourites with Boylesports on Tuesday night.

Cardiff City come into this third round clash as big underdogs at 9/2 on Boylesports while the 90 minute draw is also deemed unlikely at 14/5 with the same firm.

Head to head: History favours the hosts

Burnley have avoided defeat in each of their previous nine meetings with Cardiff, triumphing in four of the last five tussles between the pair, including both encounters in last season's English Championship.

Players to watch: Robinson to repeat the trick?

Callum Robinson scored in the previous round against Cheltenham, and the experienced Cardiff forward is as big as 7/2 on Bet365 to repeat the trick on Tuesday night.

Hannibal Mejbri racked up eight yellow cards and one red card during Burnley’s promotion campaign last season, so the all-action midfielder could be worth backing for a booking here if the bookies make prices available.

Predicted line-ups

As was the case in the previous round, Burnley chief Parker is expected to ring the changes on Tuesday night, with Armando Broja, Joe Worrall and Marcus Edwards amongst those likely to be drafted into the starting XI.

Cardiff boss Barry-Murphy is also expected to shuffle his pack here, with the aforementioned Robinson expected to spearhead the Bluebirds’ attack.

Burnley: Weiss; Sonne, Worrall, Esteve, Pires; Laurent, Ramsey, Hannibal; Tchaouna, Broja, Edwards

Cardiff: Trott; Kpakio, Fish, Chambers, Bagan; Turnbull, Wintle, Colwill; Ashford, Robinson, Davies

Anything else catch the eye?

With Burnley too short to side with at the above-mentioned price, instead look to the hosts to win alongside under 4.5 goals at 4/5 on Bet365.

This bet would have been a winning one when the two teams last came up against each other in March of this year.

Given that there is a gap in quality between the two teams, Burnley also look worthy of support to score two or more goals here at 4/5 on Boylesports.
