LIVERPOOL will be hoping the new year brings more consistency as they continue their bid to climb up the Premier League table with a tricky trip to Brentford.
It has been a mixed bag for the Reds since returning from the World Cup break, with a defeat at Manchester City in the Carabao Cup followed by successive league wins over Aston Villa and Leicester.
Jurgen Klopp has added to his impressive front line with the capture of Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven but a leaky defence remains his biggest problem.
Going for goals paid off for me in their win at Villa Park and while Liverpool look a huge threat going forward they were lucky not to concede more than just once in those clashes with Villa and Leicester.
That will give Brentford heart as Thomas Franks' men look to upset another English giant and establish themselves as a Premier League side.
The Bees headed into the World Cup break on a high after a stunning 2-1 win at Manchester City and looked set to return with another statement result as they lead 2-0 against Spurs.
Tottenham roared back to claim a point in a thrilling second half that brought up one of my bets but it was still a decent point for Brentford.
They then followed it up with an impressive 2-0 win at West Ham in another London derby on Friday night so the Bees will be buzzing when Liverpool come calling.
How the bookies view it
Liverpool are odds-on favourites for this one and their best price is just 8/13 at VBet. Brentford look a little overpriced at 5/1 with Bet365 while the draw pays 37/10 at VBet.
Recent head to head
Armchair fans will be hoping for a repeat of Liverpool's trip to Brentford last season which ended in a thrilling 3-3 draw. The Reds also scored three times in the Anfield return but kept a clean sheet as they coasted to victory.
These teams have only faced off 17 times in history, with 10 Liverpool wins, three Brentford victories and four draws.
Players to watch
Ivan Toney showed the cloud hanging over him from a betting probe hadn't affected his performances by netting against both Spurs and West Ham but he limped off on Friday with a knee problem. With the star man a doubt, Brian Mbuemo might be a better option for a Brentford goal at 9/2 with Paddy Power.
I tipped Darwin Nunez to score at Villa Park but poor finishing has let him down in the last two games so I'm steering clear of him here. Mo Salah is far more deadly in front of goal and the Egyptian is 6/5 at Unibet for anytime scorer.
Anything else catch the eye?
We were treated to six goals when Liverpool last visited Brentford and both sides have been scoring freely for most of the season. That bodes well for excitement here, with BTTS just 4/6 at Bet365 and over 2.5 goals even shorter at 8/13 with the same firm. Backing over 1.5 first-half goals paid off for me in Liverpool's clash with Aston Villa so I'm going for it again here at 29/20 with Ladbrokes.
Klopp's side dominated the corner count in games with Brentford last term, winning by a margin of nine in both matches. That makes the corner handicap worth a look here but I've yet to see that market priced up.
Unibet always have decent stats bets and I like the look of the evens on offer for Mbuemo just to have a shot on target. Over 1.5 Brentford offsides also looks good at 4/5 with Liverpool playing such a high line.
