AFC Bournemouth vs Newcastle United
English Premier League, KO: 17:30 Feb 11, 2023, Vitality StadiumAFC Bournemouth have been sinking like a stone in the Premier League so it would be a major surprise if they ended their slump with a win when high-flying Newcastle come calling.
Gary O'Neill did a tremendous job initially after stepping into the breach when Scott Parker was sacked just a few games into the new campaign. But his Cherries side have now gone nine games without a win in all competitions – with eight of those matches ending in defeat.
That's relegation form and it has left Bournemouth sitting second bottom ahead of a daunting run of fixtures that sees them face Wolves, Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool after this visit from the Magpies.
They desperately need a win to find some momentum but they are taking on a Newcastle side who have lost just once in the Premier League all season.
No team has lost fewer matches in the top flight but draws have been hindering the Magpies of late, with four of their last five league games ending level.
Slips Tips fancied them to beat West Ham last time out but the Hammers recovered to claim a 1-1 draw after Callum Wilson had brought up another of our man's bets.
That stalemate has left them just a point ahead of fifth-placed Spurs in the hunt for a Champions League slot so Eddie Howe will be desperate to return to winning ways on England's south coast.
How the bookies view it
Given the form of both sides, it's no great surprise to see Newcastle as odds-on favourites at a best 4/7 with SBK. Bournemouth are as big as 23/4 with BetUK while the draw pays 10/3 at Bet365.
Recent head to head
Newcastle have bossed this fixture of late, going seven matches unbeaten since a 1-0 loss at St James' Park in 2017. This is the third meeting this season, with the Magpies winning 1-0 at home en route to the Carabao Cup Final after a 1-1 stalemate in the Premier League on Tyneside.
Players to watch
Bournemouth splashed out on Bristol City's Antoine Semenyo in the January window to add some much-needed firepower up front. He drew a blank on his debut at Brighton and looks a bit overpriced at 11/2 with Paddy Power to get off the mark here.
Callum Wilson will relish going up against one of his old clubs and heads south in high spirits after netting against West Ham last time out. The England striker is 17/10 at Unibet for anytime scorer.
Anything else catch the eye?
Newcastle have the meanest defence in the Premier League and Bournemouth have been struggling in front of goal so a Magpies win to nil appeals at 29/20 with BetVictor.
Howe's side have also lacked punch up front of late, scoring just six times in their last six games, so under 2.5 strikes also stands a chance here at 13/15 with SBK. Betting against BTTS is a bit shorter at 4/5 with the same firm.
Allan Saint-Maximin made a rare start last time out for Newcastle and looks to be getting back to full fitness. He should get more game time here and Unibet price the maverick French forward at 10/13 just to have a shot on target.
Neither side is renowned for putting the boot in and I like under 3.5 cards, which pays 27/25 at Unibet. That bet landed when these teams last faced off, with only two yellows shown.
