WHEN I glanced at the midweek card I thought we had some really good games to look forward to then realised most of them were cup ties.
That of course put up the warnings signs and while Scottish teams will be full strength in their League Cup clashes most English sides will rest players for their Capital One Cup encounters.
There are also cup meetings in Germany, Spain and France while at least in Italy we have a Serie A card to look at and tonight there is one game with a resurgent Sassuolo at home to off-form Empoli.
There are five Capital One ties – Bournemouth v West Brom, Fulham v Derby, Liverpool v Swansea, MK Dons v Sheffield Utd and Shrewsbury v Chelsea – as well as League One matches between Chesterfield-Swindon and Orient-Preston.
West Brom boss Alan Irvine made 11 changes in the last round against Hull so I expect similar scenario and Bournemouth will make at least two enforced changes from the side that battered Birmingham 8-0 at the weekend.
Jose Mourinho will field his second stringers but they should be strong enough for the League Two side. I'd leave Liverpool-Swansea until teams are revealed and Fulham must be worth a look against Derby but both sides are making changes and that's the problem tonight.
MK Dons v Sheffield Utd is one that could provide goals as the League One rivals clash but again I wouldn't pick a winner until teams are announced.
There is only one tie in Scotland on tonight with Rangers turning their attention from off-field wrangles to on-field action. Ally McCoist's men are once again hot favourites against Premiership side St Johnstone as they were when they defeated Inverness in the previous round.
This time I tend to agree with the layers mainly because Saints are in poor form – with one draw and one win in six and just four goals in that spell.
Boss Wright hasn't replaced Stevie May and hasn't been helped by Stevie MacLean's injury. Rangers have netted nine goals in their last two games but still look a tad short to me at a best 19-20 with Ladbrokes.
Saints are 7-2 at McBookie and the draw pays 13-5 with the Scots firm. That is big for a team from a higher league – but I accept the thinking. Any Perth fan who fancies their side can consider Saints plus one at 1-1 with bet365.
Also in Scotland there should be goals when Stranraer entertain Peterhead in League One and at Elgin where Albion Rovers are the visitors.
Last night I commented that my Super Single would come from Sassuolo, Bournemouth, Fulham or Preston. I dismissed Fulham over doubts about the strength of their line-up but like the other three.
I read West Brom boss Irvine has watched Bournemouth live twice – including one long trip to Dean Court – and that suggests while he'll rotate his team he still wants to win the tie so maybe Bournemouth double chance would be a safer bet but odds are poor at 4-11.
Sassuolo beat Parma 3-1 last time out and should see off Empoli but the one stat that puts me off them is the fact the visitors, who lost 4-0 at home to Cagliari at the weekend, have drawn their last three away matches.
So that leaves me with Preston and I'm backing them mainly for a few reasons. They're bang on form having won seven in a row and face an Orient side without a win at home this season and with serious injury concerns.
Striker Darius Henderson was sent off in the 3-0 defeat at Port Vale at the weekend and also missing are Romain Vincelot, Gary Sawyer, Kevin Lisbie, David Mooney, Adam Legzdins and Lloyd James while Jack Price has gone back to Wolves with an ankle injury.
The match will be Mauro Milanese's first in charge with interim boss Kevin Nugent reverting to coach and it's a tough start.
Kevin Davies could make his first League One start of the season after impressing as a half-time sub in Saturday's 3-2 win against Fleetwood. The veteran striker and midfielder Jon Welsh were sent on at 2-0 down and could be promoted from the bench.
After much thought I'm putting Sassuolo on the Top Treble with Hannover at Aalen in the German Cup. Hannover won at Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga at the weekend and should follow up by beating the lower-league team. Complete the treble with Chelsea -1 at Shrewsbury with the Blues good enough to win by two despite the changes Mourinho will make.

The issue among some fans is where on Earth Todd Kane (the right back) is and who will be playing up top? Drogba surely can’t start after Sunday and Solanke featured for the under 21’s today. Izzy Brown is a possibility. Zouma can play at right back so Ake could possibly move to centre back if Kane isn’t available with Lewis Baker coming into the midfield.
The League Cup is tricky, but there is enough experience and kids ready to give it a go there for me to feel comfortable with us winning the tie.

Sambuca, we play a week on Saturday mate which is perfect as some were carrying injuries. It will be business as usual back at Tynecastle against Raith and we will see what prices are on offer for the handicap. Hearts coach Robbie Neilson has not minced his words about Sundays game and has made it clear it was unacceptable even though these smaller teams always raise their game against us.
Raith put in possibly the worst performance I have seen by them in 4-5 years against Alloa on Saturday. Decent odds and Hearts are a go-er.
Nade and Elliot still being injured by then would make it a banker.
Well yesterday was a bust but it highlights why level stakes are the way to go.
Besiktas lose two very late goals to put down my main bet.

I’ve noticed the pattern that after both games that Hearts were meant to ease through, they have come back with a bang, after the 0-0 draw at Dumbarton hearts following game they won 5-1, and after the 1-0 away win to Alloa (last min goal) the following game they also won 5-1 lol…and they have already beaten raith 4-0 so would a handicap bet interest you here or even a 5-1 win :-P

I went to collect my Hearts/Chelsea double chance bet that I had placed in a shop with some spare change. Not been paid out yet as the girl and the adviser over the phone did not understand the bet and it was over their £50 maximum pay out (when manager not present?) grrrrrr Always worth ago that DC as most staff don’t get it and had the teams of one I suspect I would have been paid out on a win basis!

Orient aren’t performing this season and now have a suspension… They played a lot of their time at the weekend with 10 men so could be shattered. There’s a new chairman there who’s not won over the fans yet, they sold odabajo which was a terrible decision (especially as he can pop up with goals… Play off final springs to mind), and there’s another key player ruled out through injury, can’t remember who off the top of my head, maybe vincelot or Lloyd James?
I’d stay clear of Orient tonight, they’ve shown signs lately that they are putting themselves back together after that shambles of a start to the season but they’re doing that by being tighter at the back (BTTS at home has been no for about 5 of last 6 home games… Could be wrong there but not by much).
If anything I’d be looking at under 2.5 goals but I’m definitely staying clear of it.

Good afternoon everyone.
I am conscious that you will all be very aware of what is happening “on-the-pitch”, with all the publicity that has surrounded our fantastic start to the season. However, it is some time since I updated you with what is going on “off-the-pitch”, hence this quick update. Sadly, there is nothing contained in this note that is as exciting as hearing about the footballing operations but I have promised to keep you informed so here is an update on a few things going on behind the scenes.
Operational Update
On the operational front we continue with our focus on improving the match-day experience as much as possible.This covers everything from implementing long overdue facilities improvements (e.g. providing hot running water in all the toilets; upgrading the emergency lighting; replacing the now very dated pitch-side matting; replacing broken seats) to launching our new hospitality offerings – the Gorgie Kids Club for the young ones and Gorgie Club for the not so young; and our latest, hugely popular initiative, Gorgie Live!
We want to keep improving things so do please keep on giving feedback – whether good or not so good – and don’t forget, every penny you spend in the stadium – whether for a pie, a pint or a full meal – benefits the club directly, since all of our catering is now in-house.
On a slightly different front, we have a full review of our IT and Communications infrastructure underway, with a view to making us more efficient in running the business and improving our communications with you, the supporters. The new, recently launched website has been well received as has the improved Hearts TV, where we can now offer live screening of all our home games to our overseas supporters. Again, please do keep the feedback coming.
We are embarking on an IT upgrade for our suites to provide modern business facilities for companies hiring them on non-match days. This will become an important revenue stream for the club.
Another interesting project that is now underway is a feasibility study to investigate the possibility of creating a museum within the stadium. Watch this space!
Corporate Update
At a corporate level, too, we are making progress in “sorting out” some of the problems we inherited. While this is not the most exciting part of the business, it is essential that we “get our house in order”.
Our registrars are working hard to get the 2012 share certificates sent out. The certificates are currently being printed and should be available by the middle of next week at the latest, for posting out to subscribers. We still have a few data cleansing issues to resolve. For example, a number of supporters’ clubs and pubs subscribed for shares collectively. However, to be added to the Share Register we need the name of the person who will represent the collective shareholders. This person will be the individual who will be able to attend General Meetings and will act as signatory on behalf of the group of shareholders they represent. We are currently contacting the clubs and pubs in an effort to sort this out. However, this should not hold up the bulk of the certificates going out.
Our audited annual accounts for 2012/13 have been signed off and lodged with Companies House. Believe me, that was no small task. Nor is the job of finalising the 2013/14 accounts. However, this is now well underway.
The club has a legal obligation to send copies of audited accounts to all shareholders. The cost of doing this is estimated to be in excess of £10,000. We would ideally like to avoid incurring this cost, by making the information available electronically – on the club website – with hard copies only being sent out to shareholders who request them.
We are exploring options but it is looking increasingly unlikely that we will be able to avoid posting them out for legal reasons. So, if you receive copies of the last two years’ accounts in the post, please don’t ask: “Why is the club wasting so much money posting these out?” as it will only happen if we have no other choice.
Board update
At the October Board meeting, the Directors approved the following:
An AGM will be held in December, prior to Christmas, in the Gorgie Suite. I will confirm the date once I have clarity on when the 2013/14 audited accounts are likely to be available.
Having reviewed the salary structure across all areas of the club, we propose to implement the nationally-approved Living Wage, across all staff, including part-time and contract workers. We have taken steps to register with the Living Wage Foundation thereby formalising our commitment.
We believe we will be the first football club in Scotland to sign up for this. We further believe it is entirely in keeping with the values we hold dear as a club.
The Board and senior executives at the club continue to work hard to support and develop ever-stronger relationships with all organisations and bodies closely linked with the club. This includes all supporter groups, including the Foundation of Hearts, with whom we have been working on a way to say “thank you” in a tangible way to all supporters and pledgers; it includes Big Hearts, with whom we have been discussing ways in which we can jointly give greater support to the community; and it includes the McCrae’s Battalion Trust, with whom we have been working to create a very special Remembrance Day commemoration. You will be hearing more about all of these initiatives in the very near future.
Plea for Support
Finally, I want to finish with a bit of a rant.
At a number of away games, most recently at Easter Road, some individuals in the Hearts end set off flares. On Saturday last, when we were privileged to host the women’s play-off for the World Cup between Scotland and Holland, flares were set off. On this occasion, these were set off in the Main Stand – a 100-year-old wooden structure, with over 2000 supporters, many of them children!
The people responsible seem to be totally oblivious to the fact that not only is this illegal, it is extremely dangerous… not just for them, but for everyone around them. The smoke itself can be harmful to anyone breathing it in… especially, for example, asthma sufferers; those flares eject material that can seriously burn anyone, or anything, it touches; and obviously, they can cause fires.
Please support the club in trying to stamp out such stupid, dangerous and inappropriate behaviour. Please also be assured that the club has an absolute zero tolerance policy and will issue a life-time ban to any and all individuals or groups of individuals who endanger fellow-supporters and clubs’ facilities in this way.

Sorry to be a pain but what do you mean by level stake?
Stephen, a level stake is what you decide you can afford to bet with each bet that will allow you to build a decent betting bank with more winners than losers but will not wipe you out if you have a bad run. Luke is correct in his 10% as a guideline but there are no hard and fast rules regarding what amount or percentage you bet with as only you can decide that.

Just wanted to make a comment observation. I have been following this site for a few months now and the tips on this site are great. But I have a much higher success rate when going for goals. Usually over 2.5 over 1.5 team goals BTTS etc. But teams to win is more 50/50. Sometimes they have a bad day injuries ref cards etc. Goals is the way to go.
