Welcome back to MFT’s 10-1,000 betting challenge, where we aim for a 100x return on the original investment via a small stake betting strategy, prioritising low risk and low odds en route to a long-term target.
While this column is dedicated to high-probability tips, there is no guarantee of profit. If playing along, you should consider your own budget and confidence in the tip provided, and make your own decision whether to follow, cash out or continue at every stage. 18+, please gamble responsibly.
We will use a unit system for our stakes, allowing readers to set their own unit value that suits their own budget. For the sake of simplicity, for us, 1 unit = £1.
We will continue to transparently track our progress as far as we go on the path to 1,000, but will refresh our main tracking stake back to the starting point every time we surpass 100 units – a 10x ROI.
For the sake of consistency, all tips are placed using odds from bet365. It worth pointing out that with Bet365 we can be paid out if our selection goes into a lead by two or more goals.
A 95th minute penalty won Bet 8 for us, but it should have never got to that stage. Viking & Sarpsborg saw a total of 42 shots. 11 on target with a total xG of 5.4.
Bet 9 – Porto vs Alverca – Sunday 9th August at 7pm
Porto's home game against Alverca points towards a controlled scoreline, with a full season of data supporting Porto to win and under seven goals.
Across 34 league matches last season, Porto never featured in a game containing more than four goals. Their highest combined total was four, reached eight times, meaning all 34 finished under five goals, never mind the seven required to beat this line.
The underlying numbers explain that record. Porto produced 62.6 xG and conceded just 22.4 xGA, averaging 1.84 xG and only 0.66 xGA per game. They also created 97 big chances and recorded 981 touches in the opposition box, showing consistent attacking control without their matches becoming particularly open.
Their home defensive record was even stronger. Porto kept 12 clean sheets from 17 league matches, a 71% rate and the best home record in the Primeira Liga. That gives Alverca little room to contribute enough goals to push the overall total anywhere near seven.
Alverca's numbers strengthen the case. They averaged 1.18 xG and 1.27 xGA last season, with 70 big chances and 556 touches in the opposition box. They failed to score in six of 17 away matches, while only three of their 34 league fixtures produced as many as five goals.
Last season against the top five sides on the road, they lost all five games, scoring just once and conceding an average of 2.2 goals.
The head-to-head record follows exactly the same pattern. Porto won both meetings last season, 3-0 away and 1-0 at home, with only four goals scored across 180 minutes.
Most importantly, across the 68 combined league fixtures involving these clubs last season, none produced six goals. Porto's defensive control and clear superiority make the result side appealing, while the under seven line provides a substantial ceiling.
