A CHANCE to look a little closer at the mighty Shakers' away day in Cambridge has prompted me to home in on our game with a bit more interest.
CAMBRIDGE UTD VS. BURY (3pm)
No escaping the fact that our form is red-hot after such a drab start and although Cambridge were looking better in recent games, their own form was cooled down with a 3-1 defeat to Oldham last week.
Given our dominance in front of goal with Mayor, Telford, Maynard, et al ripping holes in defences every weekend there’s two factors that caught my eye when gathering intel.
The first (any Cambridge fans who can qualify this?) is the stories surrounding the form and condition of keeper David Forde – if there is even a hint of misjudgement and lack of belief then Maynard and co will exploit it all afternoon.
The second is interesting in that both of Cambridge’s centre-halves are left-footed – the theory being that same footed defensive pairings can often subconsciously drift slightly to their favoured side thus leaving a larger than average gap between themselves and (in this case) the right-back.
All theoretical but, again, that slight opening would sync perfectly with Mayor’s ability to run at defences especially given the fact that the Cambridge defence have struggled to cope with mazy, dribbling players in particular in many of their recent matches.
Only a matter of time before Nicky Maynard gets back on the scoresheet and although his goalscoring streak has dried up, it’s not been down to a lack of effort with some excellent performances in even the games he has failed to score in.
Three selections interest me here in a game that could see the home side's defence Bury-ed for long periods of the game.
