Fine Casting definitely did come on for his seasonal reappearance, but a couple of poor jumps over the last few hurdles didn't help him when trying to fend off the strong travelling Nicky Henderson favourite who ended up winning in good fashion.

Sao Carlos 10/3 – Uttoxeter 2.42
I could be overlooking this field, but given that I think this is a very weak race, I thought the out-of-form top weight had a very good chance of returning to form now he is back over the minimum trip.
Quite a few of the horses in this race turn up with placed efforts to their name, but they don't seem to be on the most favourable of handicap marks, thus giving the top weight every opportunity to show he is better than the last two times we saw him. For whatever reason, Olly Murphy and connections decided to put this lad up to 2m 4f after he was a winner over 2m, and on both occasions, he stunk the place out. Whether that was because he didn't stay the trip or not, I'm not sure, but it seems a bit of a coincidence that he ran so badly, as he was a winner over shorter a couple of months before.
Sean Bowen has decided to take the ride on Sao Carlos when he could have easily gone on Gardener who is on a very tempting handicap mark and has had three runs this season, and with Sean going for the jockey's championship he will be very keen on winning every race he can and will want as big of an advantage for every ride, so given he is on Sao Carlos who has questions to answer, is a vote of confidence.
The yard has been firing winners for well over a month now, which shows they have their horses coming into the season in flying form.
Playaway Girl 5/1 – Fontwell 1.00
There is a strong possibility that Malinka will be able to use her experience and win this race despite not looking the best of horses, as this race really looks poor.
Despite this race looking poor and Malinka already being a winning horse over obstacles and has run to an okay level, I think one of the hurdling newcomers could be worth a punt. Malinka is rated 96 by the BHA, which looks better than what she actually is as Racing Post has given her a career-high performance of 82, which shows the level of marking up the BHA gives the juvenile horses, and when you look at a rating of 82 instead of 96, now you start to think how poor this race actually is.
Playaway Girl caught my eye the most as she is one of the only horses in the race with a proper jumping pedigree, being by Jet Away and out of a mare who has produced two winning horses over the jumps. Playaway Girl has run in three bumpers to date, running to a similar level on every start in that sphere. She might be able to kick on now tackling an obstacle, with the ground likely to be fine and her fitness should be good with those three recent runs. She is a mare so she gets the 7lb allowance from the boys, and her yard is in good form with two winners from their last three runners.
High Treason 9/2 – Fontwell 1.30
This race is a tricky one as the horses towards the top of the market all seem to have a decent chance, and then you take a look at the bottom of the weights and the same comments apply. Because of this, I'm expecting a decent price on High Treason, even though I think he will be fancied in the market by punters.
It might come as a bit of a surprise that I believe High Treason will be well-fancied as he didn't exactly jump with great fluency at Newbury on his chase debut. He was not fluent over many of his fences, but he still ran with credit and that would have been great for his learning curve over fences, and with that experience under his belt, I think he can kick on.
High Treason handles bottomless ground very well, he won on heavy ground over hurdles at this venue last year, so the soft underfoot conditions do not concern me. I like the jockey booking of 7lb claimer Mr Toby McCain-Mithchell who has already shown to be a brilliant pilot despite his inexperience. Dropping this horse down to a mark of 113 makes him a huge player in this, and I think he will run a big race for Nigel Twiston-Davies who continues to be in decent form.

5 from the last 13 two year old runners for the yard have won.
Their last 3 two year old runners have all won. All 3 of these were winning on their debuts ( their runner tonight makes debut)
Stable have a 38% strike rate at Southwell this season with 10 winners from 38 runners. In non handicap races ( as this race is tonight) they are also at 38% strike rate with 8 from 21 this season.
Trainers only runner of the day. James Doyle’ only ride of the day.
Frankel colt owned by Wathnan Racing.
Bookies haven’t taken any chances. Was hoping they’d have given the Appleby runner a bit more respect. Had hoped around 13/8. It’s a bit shorter so I halved my stake for that reason. Not the most exciting bet but it will be a winning one. Had one tomorrow I was going to share but it’s not running. One pencilled in for Thursday which will be my next bet. Will try get on a bit earlier to share a few stats. Good luck everyone for the rest of the week
