Newcastle 5.00

PENMELLYN (5.00) holds strong claims in the 7f handicap on Newcastle's twilight card.

Phillip Makin's filly drops a furlong after chasing home the Archie Watson-trained Royal Nation here before Christmas. Fourth horse Breguet Boy came out to land a decent handicap at Wolverhampton and Penmellyn is more than capable of handling a 2lb rise.

Newcastle 3.55

SULAFAAT (3.55) should be backed each-way four places with Paddy Power at around 6-1. She lost out to Greengage in a tight finish over course and distance eight days ago and has been a consistent sort for Rebecca Menzies. This looks a slightly better contest but Sulafaat is in fine form, with Russell Harris taking off 7lb.

Favourite Ice Pyramid holds definite claims on handicap debut. He ran third to Sharp Suited over course and distance in mid-December, finishing just ahead of subsequent scorer Harbour Front. Top weight Lopes Dancer will appreciate this ease in grade if wound up following a break.

Just on way back from Wolverhampton, f***ing late train means won’t be home till midnight, my one winner kept my head above the water, just !!.
Nice place, friendly locals, no pissheads and get to chat to the connections.
Did anyone see the last race, bottom weight flew away in a 2 miler, 30+ lengths clear and nothing got near at 12-1.
Saw the trainer Mr loughnane after and he said it was a well executed plan, wish I’d seen him earlier, nice chap though.

See uncle pom banged in a 10-1, 👍🍾, looks like he is back on top of his game and one to follow in current form.

As for coops and data, I suggest a shootout over 5 furlongs at southwell to sort out their misunderstandings.
Who wins ?, Tough call, better than banging their heads together I guess.
Cmon lads, you are both worthy contributors here, there are not many regulars around at the moment and would be a shame if you drove each other away.
As you might guess I’ve had one or two more barrels of beer more than I should have, but hey ho, w.t.f

    • MB 4 years ago

Sounds like you’ve had a good day out Elvis, always better if you come home with roughly the same amount as you went with, more is obviously better.
Re coops and data – coops would win by minimum 4 furlongs, data would get and of the gates and spend to much time looking to see what everyone else was doing 🏇🏻🏇🏻🏇🏻

    • chilleden 4 years ago

Yes – what a peculiar race that was! Thought he would come back to the pack but kept finding. Great thing about sport is something unpredictable always happens. Much more exciting than watching movies.

Not horse racing but on Ali carter today vs John Higgings in the snooker @ 15/8
Not a massive betting option. He is playing well this season could be a cash out bet once he goes in front . Just something of interest, got my money on .

Nothing jumping out again today but it might be worth taking a chance on some improvement from Floating Rock 1 40 MR e/w since PP paying 4 places should be good enough to get something back
Well done anyone who had a winner yesterday especially Uncle Pom ,great shout GL

Nothing from me today guys, back the w/end. Ascot and Haydock Park, should be a another cracking Saturday.

Great card at haydock, ubaltique goes for his 4th win in the 3-45.

Not looked at any rivals, just some basic info and couple to eye over.

Faye Macmanoman is a name to keep tabs on, Nigel Tinkler is her main trainer, they had a 9/1 winner on Thurs and 14/1 winner on Weds. She rides Doc Sportello at Newcastle for Tony Carroll who with her claim, should hold place claims.

Ryan Mania is a bit of a new name but has also caught my attention, I’ve just looked at his stats and they look quite remarkable. since Jan 2nd 24P3121412132. He rides BUCKLED 1355M. The horse reverts to chasing off 94. He ran off 103 LTO he goes well around this track and although winless in 13, he won off 114 late 2017 albeit over hurdles.

JOHN WILLIAMS is his 2nd ride in the 1530M. Bad form recently and not dropped massively in the weights, he runs off 97 and is stepped up 4f. He has a CD win off 95 to his name from Dec 18. He is top weight but has won off 97 carrying more weight than today.

Adam Kirby has 4 rides at Lingfield, in his last 11 rides, he has four 1sts, four 2nds and two 3rds.

240L Superseded 7/2 runs off 55, he won off 66 back in June, in his 7 subdequent starts he was effectively last. LTO over CD he was 6th although it was a tight finish and he was only 1l behind Terri Rules, the current fav, he is 2lbs better off, TR is 7/4, a place bet on Superseded will probably offer more value.

205L Merhoob 5/2 has been dropped 1lb since a 3rd over CD over New Years. He does however lose a 3lb claim so will be 2lbs higher today (95). His last win was off 98 on GS turf but this time last year he won over CD off 90 and then was 2nd off 92, also CD. He has some decent scalps and if the trainer has targetted this race he can’t be completely discounted. He’s already comfortably beat the current drifting fav Reckless Endeavour but may find 1 too good.

    • elvis parsley 4 years ago

Ryan mania not a new name, won 2013 grand national on auroras encore, retired in 2014, made comeback in 2019 !!.
Still only 30 years old, apparently retired as he struggled to do the weights for riding purposes.

Ah gd info year or 2 before my time, cheers.

Yep Elvis totally concur 100%, can not beat old knowledge and facts. Us old-timers done it, sin it, stored upstairs and moved on. Trouble is, these young uns don’t listen, think they know it all and don’t apologise when they are wrong.

Best all about it, today’s technology everything is on line. Wikipedia excellent source of information, just needs a extra 5-mins to read and explore instead of speculating and dramatising.

Racing Post and Sporting Life two very good sources for information.

Obviously seen his name but been there or there abouts and he has my attention.. madr a aomeback last year so will be a new name.for.many.. i was just spotlighting him for others melvyn.. when elvis pointed out he is an old hand i said thanks for the info and moved on.. cheers for.your valued input either way. Think you’ll find it’s the older generation typically who are stuck in their ways and reluctant to learn ,) BOL this weekeend

Ryan Mania D.O.B. 23/12/89. Is a Scottish/British NH jockey from Galashiels, most famous for winning the Grand National 2013 on the Sue Smith-trained horse Auroras 66/1. Also rode the same horse in the Scottish Grand National 2012 finished second beaten by a short head.

He began working with point-to-point horses aged 12, and rode for P Monteith and subsequently for H Jonhson, before Johnson lost his trainer’s licence at the end of 2011.

It was Mania’s first ride in the Grand National in 2013, and was his biggest achievement. As a 23-year-old, he was one of the youngest people ever to win the RACE, and was the first Scottish jockey to win the race for 117 years. He made further headlines through a fall on a different horse for S Smith the following day, which saw him airlifted to the Royal Victoria Infirmary hospital with suspected neck and back injuries. It was later discovered he had fractured a vertebra at the base of his neck.

He retired from the ‘GAME’in November 2014 at the age of 25, citing problems maintaining his riding weight as the main reason and saying that he no longer got a ”kick out of winning”.

Article in Racing Post 26/10/19. Rejuvenated Ryan Mania ready for comeback after winning the battle with the scales.

Lowest riding weight last months 10-4.

      Last 14 days 4 wins from 11 36%

STATS GB Jumps last 5 seasons April 2015-April 2020.
