I WAS hoping Justin Rose wouldn’t win at Aberdeen as he was going to be my tip for The Open this week. I know Phil Mickelson won the Scottish then the Open last year but can Rose do the same?
He triumphed in the the Quicken Loans National two weeks ago and with the Scottish under his belt he will be going for three in a row. The last person to achieve this feat was Martin Kaymer after he won the USPGA in 2010.
In 2006-07 Tiger Woods won seven in a row, including two Majors, so Justin’s got a bit to go! In the last three years at The Open Rose has missed the cut twice and finished 44th three years ago so his track record recently isn’t too great but this year he has had 10 top-ten finishes with two wins, so his form is solid.
Henrik Stenson hasn’t played a lot this year but when he has he has been consistent with six top 10s (five of them top fives) from 14 outings. In his last six outings he is 42 under par so is in good form. He finished second last year at Muirfield, three behind Mickelson, and his efforts this year should make him worth watching.
If we discount the BMW International Classic last month another man in form is Kaymer. The German won the Players Championship in May then won the US Open the following month.
In 2010 he won the Dunhill Links Championship so he can win over links courses. Can he do the double and win The Open on both sides of the Atlantic? He has to be in with a chance.
The following Americans have good track records at the last two Opens – Matt Kuchar (T15, T9), Brandt Snedeker (T11, T3), and Zach Johnson (T6, T9) so they are all in with a chance this week.
Although his form has dipped slightly since the beginning of the season Kuchar is still third in the FedEx rankings. His T15 last year was six off second place with four steady rounds which is the kind of golf you need for a links course. Mickelson won it with a magnificent 66 in the last round which set him apart from the rest but his other three rounds were just steady golf.
Snedeker has not had a good year, with only two top-10 finishes in 18. But now he has joined coach Butch Harmon I wouldn’t be surprised to see his form change over the coming months. His T11 last year was even more remarkable by the fact he shot 79 in the second round and finished only four off second place. Could be worth a punt.
Zach Johnson had a great John Deere Classic last week, finishing second on 21 under! Normally you would expect to win well on that score. He is another whose form has tailed off as the season has progressed but certainly has form in The Open.
The last three years he has finished T16, T9 and last year T6, so he’s getting closer. We all know that form doesn’t always come into it but having good results in previous Opens does stand you in good stead, so on that basis Johnson is my final pick.
20pt staking plan
Justin Rose 2.5pts ew 16-1 Ladbrokes
Henrik Stenson 2pts ew 16-1 general
Martin Kaymer 2pts ew 25-1 Ladbrokes
Matt Kuchar 1.5pts ew 40-1 bet365
Brandt Snedeker 1pt ew 40-1 William hill
Zach Johnson 1pt ew 50-1 Betfred
Ace Venturer
If the wind blows then experience could be crucial…
Darren Clarke 250/1
Yves, my four are Kaymer, Stenson, Fowler and McDowell.
Clarke is 400/1 with coral.
Good choices Mr F.
McDowell in particular is one I like.
Will be interesting to see how Tiger gets on.
Should be a great Open.
Yves, I’d reckon Tiger is a lay – he’ll do well to make the cut with the amount of golf he’s played recently. And if the wind blows …
What do you think of these top 20 finishes guys
Phil Mickelson 6/4
Martin Kaymer 6/4
Ricky Fowler 2/1
Lee Westwood 5/2
Jim Furyk 5/2
Just took Snedeker and Johnson EW with a tenner I still had in my Betfred account from risk-free placepot in Friday. Both at 50/1 and they’re paying 8 places.
Craig, 8 places is good – thought I was doing well putting mine on the other day and getting seven with McBookie. I’ll be on having a rant of any of my picks finish eighth.
Hoping at least 1 gets in too the last round still in wi a chance Paul but was gonna go £5 EW on Stephen Gallagher at 80/1 just because he’s from Linlithgow, may have to stick something on him too just incase haha
Craig, he’s in good form so could have a decent week but not sure he’s ready to win a Major. Hope he makes the Ryder Cup though.
No clue about Golf but it’s amazin what i’ll watch if i got a couple quid on! Readin MrF’s write up and Craig backin it up £2.50 e/w (8 places Betfred) on Snedeker. Bet365 7 places, Betvic 6, Paddypower 7 places. Betfred seems the place to be on this guys
PA, McBookie going 7 too but the golf tips aren’t mine – I’m on Kaymer, Stenson, Fowler and McDowell all each way with Kaymer my main bet.
Good luck Mrf, an 8th place will do moi at 50/1!
PA I’ve not a clue about golf either, just took the 2 EW in hope as I liked the stats and prices Ace Ventura put up plus had £10 sitting in Betfred account :)
Took Adam Scott 16/1 McBookie, seems to have been ignored in some write ups.
Why has nobody tipped tiger woods?at 22/1 got 2 b worth an each way shout?
Throwing money away if you back tiger in my opinion. Been out too long. He will need a few more tournaments under his belt and will have to show some form before I would consider it. I’m more inclined to bet he misses the cut this open. If the price is good.
He had a fractured knee a few year back and still won us open after playing 9 holes of golf leading upto it, I wouldn’t say he’s been out too long just think a lot of others have found a constant level. Just imagine tho, if you could have ever got 20/25 on tiger in past !!!!! Might be worth it as a punt, with others in mind as main bets
GAZ B, I wouldn’t be putting a dime on Tiger but anyone who feels differently should take advantage of the prices. Alva makes a good point about the weather though – if the forecasters are right those going out early on Friday will have an advantage.
The weather forecast for the open Thu. is almost perfect so no excuses.Fri it turns in the afternoon a bit thundery and showers.I have picked these players because on Fri they go early.Scott,Rose,Mickelson and Bubba.E/W bets are Bjorn and Jimenez.
The Frenchman Victor Dubuisson tops the order of merit on the European tour so as it stands is in the Ryder Cup team he is 125/1.
alva, who is offering 125-1?
Well done monty last week..14s nice..
Open ..ace johnson the same as you..also bubba mannasero broberg gallagher gmac kuchar..bol guys..not easy
Mr F..Betfair are paying 8 places too in Open..
Malkster, most are going 7 or 8 but make sure the price is right too. Racing Post have an excellent 20-page pullout on The Open today and good to see Steve Palmer has flagged up my outside tip Ilonen who was 100-1 yesterday. He also likes McDowell who I am on while Jeremy Chapman agrees with Ace Venturer and is on Stenson. Palmer also tips Fowler, who I have each way, at 7-2 to finish top 10 at 7-2 with Paddy Power and that looks a decent bet.
S Garcia.T Bjorn.J BLixt.B Snedeker.and Z Johnson.gives me an interest in the open.not really into golf picked these from reading a few posts on here and other forums.
Mr F ilonen won on this course when he was younger..did u know that?..horses for courses..
Malkster, I mentioned that yesterday – the Amateur Championship. Worth a small each-way bet and I’m told if the weather’s bad Shane Lowry could be the man.
My best bet of the week P Mickelson 4/5 to beat T Woods 72 hole match betting PP.
Got on Stenson ew, Mcdowell ew, Poulter ew (he was my next door neighbour for a couple of years, lovely guy, bit arrogant though) and Fowler to finish top 10 as well! Placed them a couple of days ago and was amazed at ew paying out 7 places but 8 is getting ridiculous(ly good for us).
Finchy, if Poulter farts he let’s the world know via twitter! Just like Rio Ferdinand, obsessed with being and staying famous.
spieth and day ew at betred first 8 places both at 40/1 tho spieth now been shortened to 35/1 !!!!
Guys…
Just popped into coral and put a £10 ew bet on angel cabrera…. asked to take the price and she strangely said 175/1! And she wrote that on my slip.
Just checked on oddschecker and the general price is 75/1 .. she must’ve meant that but what happens if he wins/ places do they have to give me quoted odds?
GeorgeK, I’m afraid they don’t have to give you quoted odds if it’s a mistake. You might be lucky and get 175-1 if it’s not noticed but you should expect to be paid at 75-1 if he wins or is placed.
No..sorry george dont think u will get enhanced price..manager in shop will probably check it and changed it..I used to be manager in bookies..thats the usual outcome..
i think g-mac will give it a good run this year.
bigmick! bout ya
i,m good ulster what about yerself
hanging on in there mate. could do with a holiday! lol
tell me about it theres not 2 bits of me hanging together the right way.lol
lol
Nobody has mentioned Adam Scott yet !!!! Number 1 in the world and plays a good short game..im on him 14/1.
OPEN GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP
FIRST ROUND LEADER
ADAM SCOTT 25/1 (EACH WAY) (1/4 1-6) (Skybet)
Just my opinion as he has prepared well for this tournament.
** Alasu ;) **
OPEN GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP
JORDAN SPEITH 40/1 (EACH WAY) (1/4 1-7) (Bet365)
Just my opinion again as he is a winner waiting to happen in the Majors.
T,Bjorn @ 66/1,Luke Donald @ 66/1 and a real wild one Thongchai Jaidee @ 150/1 all e/w obviously.
Hi Paul
Was going to place bet with hills who were giving 1/4 odds 7 places
However this morning discovered bet fred were giving 1/4 odds 8 places so used them instead
Paddy power are offering 1/4 odds 7 places
Appreciate you are now aware bet fred are offering 1/4 odds 8 places
Thought you might have done a golf competition like you did in the past
Alan, holidays preventing that I think – it’s admin I usually put up.
I like the look of Neil Bradley, hopefully he can go further than being best amateur, got him at 500/1 each way with bf, so would be great if he could replicate Justin Rose before him and finish in the top 8 on his debut.
Phil mickleson 22/1 8 places bet Fred.
Playing well and the best short game around, hope the weather is on his side of the draw.
Rory McIlroy to beat tiger woods in first round 4/5 bet365
Been bucketing down all day apparently so will play nice and soft tomorrow if that is the case for the early tee offs.
EW’s on Lowry, Z Johnson, Karlsson and Fowler
Kaymer
Mickleson
Furyk
Gallacher
Fowler
Z Johnson
all e/w
Fairly happy after round 1.
Fairly happy after round 1.
baza, no chance in my opinion. No form and struggling for fitness which explains odds of 125-1.
Stephen Gallagher can’t be over looked here, he looked down and out at the Scottish Open and clawed his way back to tied 5th at -10 he hasn’t had a bad season either. Simon Dyson is another to keep an eye on!
Brian, I looked at Gallacher 11-8 for top Scot but can’t rule out Warren and Lawrie I suppose. Jamieson also had a good finish at Aberdeen and is 8-1 at bet365 to be top of the eight Scots.
George McNeill. 400/1
Jamie Donaldson 100/1
Brooks koepka 200/1
Not bad prices for top 20s too
1st round leader M A Jiminez @ 55/1 e/w prepared as always ,biggest cigar available and finest red wine ,top man.
Morning All. Been following the site for a while, thought this morning why not join in! I have just put a bet on Jiminez to be the top Senior, Jaidee to be the top Thai, Choi to be top Korean and Warren to be the top Scot. Think my last 4 pound returns around 130, just thought I would let you all know if anyone fancies it!
Like I said Stephen Gallagher watch this space
Oosthuizen doing not too bad Mr F, got a sky diver on each way @ 103/1 what is happening to your selections????
baza, Oosthuizen doing better than I expected but a long 36 holes to go. Just put up a post and most of my players going OK, especially Fowler, but McIlroy’s going to be tough to stop – looks in the zone,
You picked fowler mrf?
Yousure, yeah I tipped Fowler and backed him of course at 40-1. Going so well now I can look at laying him if I want. However, loads of golf to be played next 2 days but much more interesting with the field closing in on Rory.
Wee chance of each way return on Darren Clarke. Great round from him today!
Delighted with that so far, fingers crossed they hold up tomorrow. Might even get Lowry to nick into the top eight with a good round but that might be a bit greedy.
Got to lay Spurs for a small interest!
