WILLIAM HILL have reported a surge of support for Phil Mickelson to win The Open Championship after his success at the Scottish Open.

Lefty conquered a links course for the first time and after his impressive display at Castle Stuart is 18-1 from 28-1 to triumph at Muirfield this weekend.

Mickelson's win was his first on UK soil and came in a tournament he's supported well over the past 13 years. By his own admission he loves playing in Scotland and is beginning to come to terms with links golf.

If he can keep out of the punishing rough, and that will mean using the driver as seldom as possible, Mickelson will be a danger thanks to his sublime short game and his putting which he's been working with on five greens in his back garden.

William Hill spokesman Rupert Adams said: “With Mickelson in form and with us playing seven places punters have been lumping on him to both win and to place. We could see yet another million pound Mickelson liability!”

BetVictor are paying eight places and we've teamed up with them for out Open competition so watch out for details.

My Open tips will be up later in the week but for now here are some prices from William Hill.

Winning Nationality: 6/4 United States, 5/2 GB & Ireland, 9/2 Mainland Europe, 8/1 South Africa, 10/1 Australia/New Zealand, 20/1 Japan/Korea/Thailand, 33/1 Rest Of The World

Mr F, Its a good offer by Betvictor I saw they was going 8 places so I’m going to pick 5 E/W selections. Mickleson was on my shortlist, but I think its right no one as won the Scottish open then the British open. I’ve already looked at Bjorn, Gmac and Oosthuizen, they are on my shortlist but after this British summer with the Lions, Andy Murray winning, hopefully England win the Ashes it maybe finally Westwood year.

thechief, you’re right about no one winning the Scottish Open and The Open back-to-back but if anyone can do it then it’s Mickelson. Played last week like he was on holiday until the final stretch so won’t be drained. I’d already decided to back him each-way before he won on Sunday as well as 3 or 4 others.

I kinda like him E/W too and I think outside a British winner, he would be a popular winner, the chip he played in the playoff was typical Mickleson. It be nice too see him win it and he is a nice ew price. Some good looking 3 balls too and a chance of some nice singles.

thechief, next to a Scot, he’d be the most popular winner at Muirfield. Always talks up the country and got an amazing reception on Sunday. In fact I think the crowd reaction cost him the three-putt on the last because he lost focus a bit. But regrouped in the play-off. I’ll do some threeballs but prefer to wait until the twoballs.

I’d be interested to see who your other 3 or 4 picks are Mr F. Just so I’m not sponging I’ll throw some names in the mix. Ill be taking on Bet Victor with their cracking e/w offer. Lefty is a definite on my list. Jason Day will be another, he’s mega consistent and in my opinion it’s only a matter of time before he’s a major winner. Stenson was another that was sure to be on my list but his mini blip on Sunday has me doubting his mental strength. Only sure fire bets so far are are Phil Mick and Jason Day e/w. Open to many more opinions and suggestions……

Chris, the reasoning will be up when I get time but the others are Justin Rose, Ernie Els and maybe Thomas Bjorn but have to check on his fitness. Jason Day’s record in Majors has to be respected, the boy Branden Grace might go close as he lost Sunday’s play-off to Mickelson and won the Dunhill Links a couple of years ago. Lee Westwood’s interesting because I see he’s been working with Rose and Woods’ coach Sean Foley and he’s got to try something to get back to his best and in contention for that first Major. Unfortunately there are so many who could contend and that makes it wide Open.

Go to agree with Chris re Jason day. Think he’s got the game to win a major soon. I’ll be backing him along with colsaerts. also a small stakes bet on sterne at a high price!

Calsaerts hits the ball a mile. He will not need his driver at all this weeks and he seems to enjoy links golf. It’s a good shout and he’s also on my short list

Daryl, it’s always difficult because so many players can have a good week. Anyway, Super Single is on and off out for a bit.
