THE Diamond Country Club in Atzenbrugg, Austria is the host to this week’s Lyoness Open on its Championship Course for the eighth year in a row.
The course has nine holes with water in play and there is also the fact greens are generally small and run about 11 on the stimpmeter. Uniquely the course has two par threes that play to island greens so could be a bit of excitement there. Driving accuracy, GIR and putting average could be the stats to follow.
Englishman James Morrison was been having a steady year until he missed the cut at the BMW PGA last month. The 32-year-old is 36th in the Race to Dubai. Won his first tournament in the Madeira Open in 2010 and had to wait till 2015 to win his second at the Open de Espana. Had a couple of top-10 finishes in February on the Sunshine Tour in South Africa. Driving Accuracy: 63.9% (50th) GIR: 59.4% (74th) Putting Average: 28.8% (36th)
Another player I think can do something here is South African Jaco van Zyl. The 38-year-old played well in the BMW PGA, finishing T14 and that was with a 77 in the third round.
He then took 10 strokes off that total the next day. I’m really surprised he has never won on the European Tour but has triumphed numerous times on the Sunshine Tour. His stats look good for here and with a weakened field he is well worth a wager. Driving Accuracy: 67.8% (25th) GIR: 68.2% (108th) Putting Average: 29.2 (64th)
