Sunday’s Football Bet of the Day sees me head to the French Ligue 1 and there is one fixture in particular that appeals to me for goals.

Lorient vs Lille

🇫🇷 Ligue 1

⏰ Sunday 2nd October, 12:00

The surprise package in French football this season Lorient play host to Lille at the Stade du Moustoir on Sunday lunchtime in what promises to be an entertaining encounter.

Lorient’s incredible start to the season continued last time out, as they won 1-3 at newly-promoted Auxerre. Régis Le Bris’ side have now won six of their opening eight Ligue 1 fixtures – including each of their last four – to see them positioned in third position. Lorient have found the back of the net in all eight of their Ligue 1 tussles this season, netting on multiple occasions in six of them – with only PSG (26), Marseille and Montpellier (both 19) having found the back of the net more times than the 17 they have managed. Les Merlus have conceded 12 goals in their last seven league matches, with their sole clean sheet coming against rock-bottom Ajaccio.

Paulo Fonseca has made a fairly inconsistent start as Lille boss, with the Portuguese having W4-D1-L3 of his opening eight league matches in charge. Lille got back to winning ways last time out as they defeated Toulouse 2-1 at home last time out, moving them up to seventh place in the table, just a point off Monaco in fifth. Les Dogues have found the back of the net in all eight of their league outings this season, scoring 16 goals. However, the 2021 Ligue 1 champions are yet to register a clean sheet this season, conceding 16 goals.

Bet of the Day

Despite many tipping them for relegation this season, Lorient incredibly sit in third position after eight rounds of matches, with Les Merlus having amassed 19 points from a possible 24. Régis Le Bris’s hosts come into this match having won each of their last four – including a notable 3-1 success over Olympique Lyonnais- but face a tough test against a Lille side that has won three of their previous five league outings.

These two sides have found the back of the net in all eight of their Ligue 1 tussles this season, and given they’ve managed just two clean sheets between them this season, I expect both to get on the scoresheet once more. To boost the price up, I’m happy to add in over 2.5 goals. 6/8 of Lorient’s fixtures have seen at least three strikes, whilst 7/8 of Lille’s have seen the same.
