Football Bet of the Day

Looking to bounce back from the surprise lack of goals in Denmark on Friday, Saturday’s Football Bet of the Day sees me head to Ligue 1, and I’ve highlighted a goals-based selection in one of the fixtures.

⚽️ Lyon vs Rennes

🇫🇷 Ligue 1

⏰ Saturday 26 April, 20:05

Lyon will look to boost their hopes of Champions League qualification on Saturday night as they welcome resurgent Rennes to the Groupama Stadium in a fixture that appeals to me for goals.

Paolo Fonseca’s hosts are the third-highest scorers in Ligue 1 this season, firing in 58 goals across their opening 30 matches, with 30 (52%) of them coming on home soil.

Les Gones have found the back of the net in 25 of their previous 26 Ligue 1 outings, notching on multiple occasions in 17 (65%) of them – including in 10/11 (91%) under their new Portuguese coach – and will be confident of breaching a Rennes defence that’s conceded in all 10 of their trips to teams positioned in 14th and above, shipping 22 goals.

Ex-Newcastle United defender Habib Beye has seen his side score 45 goals across their opening 30 Ligue 1 contests this season, with 22 (49%) of them coming on their travels.

Les Rouge et Noirs have made the net bulge in 10/14 (71%) of their road trips in the French top flight this season – notching 2+ goals in six of their last seven – and will look to continue their recent impressive goal-scoring record away from home against a Lyon backline that’s kept just two clean sheets across their last 12 Ligue 1 outings.

Bet of the Day

Lyon’s opening 30 Ligue 1 clashes this season have averaged an eye-catching 3.30 goals per game, with Over 2.5 Goals landing in 20 (67%) of them – including in 10 of their past 11 – whilst 19 (63%) have seen goals at both ends, including each of their last five and 10 of their past 12.

Rennes’s opening 14 Ligue 1 clashes on the road this campaign have averaged 3.21 goals per game, with Over 2.5 Goals landing in nine (64%) of them – including in five of their last seven – whilst 4/5 (80%) of their trips to the top-seven have seen goals at both ends.

Given almost all of Lyon’s matches under Paulo Fonseca have been full of goals – coupled with Rennes’s recent impressive goal-scoring form away from home – I’m happy to back a high-scoring encounter between these two sides in Lyon on Saturday night.
