Best French Open Bets Today
Ruud to Beat Davidovich Fokina 3-1 @ 9/4
Two clay court specialists in Casper Ruud and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina square off in round two of the French Open this Thursday.
The pair couldn’t be bringing more polarising form into this match. For Ruud, he leads the ATP Tour in wins this season, and has the best start to a calendar year of his life. Fresh off a title in Geneva, the Norwegian is high on confidence and loving the European clay in 2024.
First up, Ruud breezed past tricky Brazilian qualifier Filip Meligenia Alves, losing just 10 games in the 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 thrashing. For Davidovich Fokina, his path wasn’t quite so simple. The Spaniard lost the opening set against Monacan Valentin Vacherot, scraping by in four sets courtesy of a late tiebreak victory.
Davidovich Fokina has had a challenging year so far. His only victory of note came in the first week of the season over Hubert Hurkacz, since which he’s failed to beat a top 50 player or win two consecutive completed matches. However, the 24-year-old has found success on the Parisian clay before, making the quarter-finals here in 2021.
We expect there will be flashes of brilliance from Davidovich Fokina in this match, plus a few off moments from a Ruud that has played a lot in the past month. We don’t expect it to alter the winner, but a 3-1 scoreline would be no surprise.
Zeppieri to Defeat Kokkinakis @ 11/10
Thanasi Kokkinakis played an epic five setter against fellow countryman Alexei Popyrin in the first round. We expect he’ll pay the consequences of that effort in this match, and fall to young Italian Giulo Zeppieri.
Here’s a stat for you: Kokkinakis has lost the next round every time he’s won a five-set match at Grand Slams. He’s gone the distance and won on four occasions across his career, but every single time, he’s failed to back up the next match. At 28 years old, it’s hard to see anything changing for the Aussie.
This pick is more about Kokkinakis than it is about Zeppieri, however, the Italian still has game. After all, he’s coming into this match having just sent a seed–albeit Adrian Mannarino–home.
Struff vs Bublik to Be Four Sets @ 13/8
Our final tip for day five of the French Open is that Jan-Lennard Struff and Alexander Bublik will play a four set match.
These two are both highly mercurial players, and it’s hard to tip which way the result will go. We’re leaning towards Struff–after all, he is our dark horse, and we have Bublik on upset alert this year. However, given how volatile both are, outright betting doesn’t feel like a rewarding market.
Instead, expect that both players will have their moments in this match up. They each possess huge serves and groundstrokes that can run hot. Across the course of this clash, both should be able to take sets. Don’t expect a fiver though, as neither play too many of those.
