Poland vs Portugal

, KO: 19:45 Oct 12, 2024, National Stadium Warsaw
Portugal

Poland have responded well to their disappointing exit from Euro 2024 and will be looking to make it a hat-trick of UEFA Nations League wins when they visit Poland.

Lots of people had Roberto Martinez's side down as dark horses for glory in Germany back in the summer as few squads had greater strength in depth.

But after a solid start they lost their final group game to minnows Georgia then limped past Slovenia on penalties in the last 16 before losing to France in a quarter-final shootout.

Successive 2-1 victories at home to Croatia and Scotland got them back on track in the Nations League though and Portugal can now seize control of the group if they beat the Poles.

After crashing out in the group stage at the Euros, Poland won 3-2 at Hampden in their Nations League opener but only thanks to a last-gasp gift from Grant Hanley as he conceded a needless penalty.

That was followed by a 1-0 loss in Croatia, with Luka Modric's winner bringing up a bet for Slips Tips, so the Poles will need to up their game to see off this talented Portuguese side.

How the bookies view it: Poles written off

With Poland failing to impress so far in this group, Betano make them 4/1 outsiders, even with home advantage. Portugal are just 3/5 and the draw pays 27/10.

Head to head: Portugal in control

These countries last faced off in the Nations League six years ago and it was Portugal who edged it, winning 3-2 away from home before a 1-1 draw back in Lisbon.

Poland haven't won in the last five meetings, with their last victory in this fixture coming way back in 2006.

Players to watch: Lewandowski still the go-to guy

Poland remain heavily reliant on Robert Lewandowski and the veteran has started the season well for Barcelona. He has netted five times in his last two outings so appeals at 2/1 with Bet365 to breach a Portugal defence that has conceded in both Nations League games.

Cristiano Ronaldo shows no sign of slowing down at the age of 39 and has netted the winner in Portugal's last two matches. But Betano price him at just 4/5 for anytime scorer here so it's better looking elsewhere. Milan winger Rafael Leao should start out wide and looks decent value at 9/4 with Bet365 for anytime scorer.

Probable line-ups

Martinez has been able to call-up pretty much a full-strength squad but has to decide which of his forwards to unleash. Poland should be along similar lines to the team that lost in Croatia, with Lukasz Skorupski continuing in goal ahead of Marcin Bulka.

Poland: Skorupski, Bednarek, Dawidowicz, Kiwior, Frankowski, Szymanski, Zielinski, Urbanski, Zalewski, Piatek, Lewandowski.

Portugal: Costa; Dalot, Dias, Inacio, Mendes; Silva, Vitinha, Fernandes; Neto, Ronaldo, Leao.

Anything else catch the eye?

Portugal have conceded in both their Nations League games so far so I fancy BTTS in this one, although the odds aren't great at 5/6 with Betano. Adding on over 2.5 goals takes the odds to 11/8 at Bet365.

Both teams have plenty of pace out wide so it could pay to back some defenders for a card. Portugal full-back Nuno Mendes is a tempting 9/2 to go in the book while Poland stopper Jakub Kiwior is 15/4 with the same firm.
