The tide threatened to turn on Thursday but Friday didn't get the memo, continuing the current trend of can you actually adam and steve it. I am not one for excuses but we've been on the wrong side of fine margins all week.
Value was about all we got as the day unfolded. Insanity halved in price, he was caught on the wrong side of the track as the race unfolded, although his Ascot exploits probably cost him any involvement. The ‘obvious' each way angle I mentioned finished a neck 2nd. I went with the obvious in the next and quickly regretted it, thanks a lot Hayley. Angelo Buonarrotti did the business, forced to overlook him at the prices, his alternative was a poor selection from a stable who had a winner on the day. In the last, a late switch to Zain Blue looked a decent move as he shortened from 28s into 10s and placed. The winner Treasured Time was a selection up until the 11th hour. I messaged the lads here saying it'd win given what had transpired this week and sure enough Murphy's Law reared its head once again.
With one last crack at York today, let us hope we can start to get the rub of the green.
Sea King 16/1 6 places – 15.35 York
Sea King isn't an overly obvious winner of the Ebor but is the value play for me. It may turn out his form lines aren't anywhere near strong enough but Sir Michael Stoute knows how to train a stayer and at the expense of chancing an Irish runner, I'll stick with this Sea the Stars gelding.
The horse hasn't much form beyond 1m4f but absolutely cantered into contention at Ayr 6 weeks ago, carrying 11lbs more than Dark Moon Rising who placed in a heritage handicap here yesterday, it was almost a steering job for Paul Mulrennan.
Twelve days later, Sea King was involved in a 3 way bolt for the line giving weight to both of those who finished ahead of him. Shadow Dance finished a length ahead carrying 5lbs less, he won Dark Moon Rising's race yesterday carrying a decent weight. The winning trainer has Epic Poet entered in this, who is yet to try this trip but must be well thought of at home.
Chasing Aphrodite 14/1 5 places – 17.20 York
Oviedo caught my eye last season in a big race at Royal Ascot before fading away tamely, he is one above when 2nd in this race last year carrying 5lbs more, he's overlooked. The Kubler's have had a cracking year, they won this race last year, long serving jockey Richard Kingscote is on and a double figure price makes some appeal.
Chasing Aphrodite has won two decent handicaps since last May, Sporting Life have their sex listed as ‘Horse', so I suppose I'll refer to them as they. On a mark lower than both of those wins, I am going to chance them after not seeing out the trip last time. The horse hasn't been overly tried beyond a mile which was initially offputting but having made all at Sandown in June, running on strongly, I feel she can just about make her presence felt in this.
Strike Red 20/1 5 places – 16.10 York
Blue Prince was on the radar yesterday, he crossed paths with Billyjoh who runs in this, he has a high draw but could run well if finding some unused ground out wide. Appleby is sure to want some prize money after Big Evs and Big Mojo disappointed.
With 3 of the first 4 in the market worth considering, I have bypassed plenty to land on perhaps Richard Fahey's second string Strike Red. The trainer is enthusiastic about the horse's capabilities but rain would dramatically increase his chances, I don't think any is forecast so hopefully he isn't eased down and saved for an easier race.
He has a couple of nice wins in big field handicaps over the previous two seasons, one here one at the Curragh, he isn't weighted to reverse much of the Goodwood form but despite the potential ground concerns, his price isn't overlooked.
Tabletalk 16/1 5 places – 14.25 York
As is the norm in these races, plenty at the top of the market hold obvious claims and all of them are an each way price. I of course will take a chance a lightly raced runner from the Tom Clover yard who has had a winner at Goodwood yesterday and his 3 prior to that all placing.
Rossa Ryan was on the only time this horse won with nothing to report in terms of form. He ran in the Derby at Epsom but only finished 10th before making a decent start to his handicapping career off 94 at Ascot last month. The horse was behind Insanity who had excuses for failing for us yesterday, he won next time out, the winner is the respected, Mouth Atlas yet to be seen again. A Gosden Shadwell horse was back in 4th, who had won off 10lbs lower previous whilst Burdett Road was in 5th off a break – a pipe opener for his spin in the Ebor.
I backed Spaceport when winning last time and he is narrowly overlooked for this one.
– Advised Bet – EW Lucky 15
WHAT IS A LUCKY 15 BET?
A Lucky 15 bet consists of 15 unique bets, covering every possible combination that comes from backing four selections. The 15 bets are broken down like this:
– 1 fourfold accumulator
– 4 trebles, with each treble omitting one of your selections
– 6 doubles, again covering every possible combination
– 4 singles
The attraction of a Lucky 15 is that it offers many more ways to win than a standard accumulator. A Lucky 15 uses both your acca and your singles as well as producing trebles and doubles that reward you for correctly calling 2/4 or 3/4 of your selections. To cover the 15 separate bets, a Lucky 15 uses your stake 15 times. If you were to place £1 on a Lucky 15, you would be staking £15 in total across the various bets.
Well done today 👏👏
