Next manager sacked odds

Even at this early stage of the Premier League campaign, the next manager sacked odds can fluctuate significantly by the week.

The idea of a manager being sacked in the early weeks of the season might seem crazy but it has been done before, most notably in 2017, when Frank de Boer was sacked by Crystal Palace after just four games. Could any of the frontrunners here suffer the same fate?

Managers to watch

Sean Dyche (Everton) – 2/1

Dyche's current odds to be the next casualty are well-deserved, as it's not just the four bad defeats that are troubling. Everton's late collapses against Bournemouth and Aston Villa were concerning to say the least, suggesting there is a real fragility in the squad.

That is also one of the prime reasons that they've seen their relegation odds shorten too, with one bookmaker even paying out early for the Toffees to suffer demotion for the first time since 1951.

The situation is alarming and it has sparked talk of a potential return for David Moyes, who once rescued Everton from the brink of relegation in 2001/02 before giving them a renewed sense of purpose later in the 2000s. Could Moyes fill the ‘returning hero' role that Royle did 30 years ago?

It is commonly believed that a new owner would sack Dyche almost immediately, after a poor 2024 that has seen Everton win just five league games to date. As it stands, Farhad Moshiri is the club owner in name only, with no presence at Goodison Park since January 2023, at a time when Everton were in a similarly dire run of form before clinching survival on the final day of 2022/23.

Moshiri's absence from club affairs has arguably given Dyche much more time than previous Everton managers who have been sacked by the British-Iranian owner. Potential new owner John Textor's reported bid and takeover of the Merseyside club remains ongoing, and in a rather surreal turn of events, Sunday evening's news even reported that musician Jay-Z could be part of Textor's takeover.

The situation remains unclear, but that only adds to the value of Dyche's market-best 2/1 odds to be the next Premier League manager sacked.

Erik Ten Hag (Man Utd) – 6/1

Erik ten Hag was given a stay of execution by Manchester United after the Dutchman won the FA Cup at the end of last season, but the pressure is already mounting on him after a poor start to the new season. The Red Devils have already lost twice, and given that one of them was a humiliating 3-0 defeat at home to Liverpool, serious questions are being asked.

INEOS weren't shy about speaking to other managers over the summer, and the addition of Ruud van Nistelrooy to the backroom staff raised eyebrows. The former United goal machine has managerial experience and did a good job at PSV, so many people are assuming he would be the man to replace Ten Hag if he is given the boot at Old Trafford.

Enzo Maresca (Chelsea) – 14/1

Enzo Maresca's odds to go next shortened after Chelsea's 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace before the break. The result came after a humiliating defeat away from home to Servette in the Europa Conference League, and though Chelsea went on to beat Bournemouth on the road, results aren't the only reason why Maresca finds himself in trouble.

The former Leicester boss has made some scathing comments in the press about certain club players, and given that he hasn't been able to ship all of those players out, trouble may still be close at hand. Will Maresca suffer the same fate as Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter and Mauricio Pochettino under Todd Boehly?

A continued upturn in form will be needed on the basis of how most managers have fared in SW6 over the past decade.

Our prediction to be the next manager sacked

At the minute, it's a toss-up between Dyche and Ten Hag but we'd still lean more towards the Everton boss getting the axe first. It would be a bad look for the Man Utd board to fire Ten Hag just weeks into the new season after publicly backing him over the summer, so he will likely be afforded more time to turn things around, especially after United's 3-0 win at Southampton.

Dyche, on the other hand, is already on borrowed time. The threat of relegation in the club's final season at Goodison Park is a horrifying one, and the club won't hesitate if they feel Dyche has little chance of beating the drop. The looming presence of Moyes also won't help ahead of a daunting trip to Leicester.
