ABERDEEN have made a strong start under new boss Jimmy Thelin but the acid test comes tonight as they kick off the SPFL Premiership campaign in Perth against St Johnstone.
The Dons cruised through their League Cup group, winning all four games and scoring 15 goals in the process. But the toughest side they faced was Championship outfit Airdrie and Thelin’s side were perhaps a bit lucky to win that game 2-1 at Pittodrie.
A trip to McDiarmid Park will give us a better idea of how the Swede’s rebuild is progressing with St Johnstone looking much more threatening up front this season.
Saints slumped to a 3-2 loss at Alloa in their League Cup group but a red card for Aaron Essel played a big part in that result. They smashed five past East Fife in their last outing, with Benji Kimiopka bringing up one of my Super Singles, so this will be a test for Aberdeen’s defence.

St Johnstone v Aberdeen Top Betting Tips
This fixture hasn’t provided much in the way of entertainment in recent seasons, with under 2.5 goals landing in each of the last 13 meetings.
BTTS has only come up in two of those matches but the form of both sides in the League Cup suggests this game might be a bit more open. So I’m steering clear of the goals market and going for cards and corners instead.
Over 10.5 flag kicks looks good at 11/10 with Betfred while over 52.5 booking points pays 11/8. It’s probably smarter backing players for cards and Dons skipper Graham Shinnie is 13/5 at Bet365 while Saints midfield Matt Smith is 9/2.
France v Egypt Top Tips
It’s semi-final time at the Olympics and hosts France are hot favourites to see off Egypt. Betfred make Les Bleus just 1/7 to go through and the odds only increase to 3/10 for a win in 90 minutes.
Egypt are 4/1 to reach the final and that looks a bit overpriced given the beat Spain to top their Group. The Egyptians have only conceded twice across the whole tournament so France might need to show a bit of patience.
Backing most goals to come after the break appeals at 21/20 while a French win with under 3.5 goals also looks good at 19/20.
Jean-Philippe Mateta has been leading the line well for Thierry Henry’s side and he’s evens for a goal.
Morocco v Spain Top Tips
The other semi-final sees Morocco take on Spain and this has the potential to be a much tighter game.
These sides faced off at the Qatar World Cup and it was the Moroccans who came out on top, winning on penalties in a tense 0-0 draw.
This game could be equally tight with so much at stake so I fancy the half-time draw at 11/10.
The card markets are also worth a look and Moroccan star Achraf Hakimi looks a little overpriced at 3/1 with Bet365 to go into the book.
Barcelona’s Fermin Lopez scored twice in the quarter-finals so the 3/1 on offer for him to grab another goal also seems decent value.
