Player Form: Sinner Running Hot
This year has been Sinner’s year. The Italian won his first Grand Slam, and ascended the ATP rankings for the first time as well. At 41-3 for the year, he’s a force to be reckoned with and playing the tennis of his life.
So far at Wimbledon, the top seed has done what he’s needed to in order to advance. His first two matches saw sets dropped, with one to Yannick Hanfmann in the opening round, before former finalist Matteo Berrettini also pushed him to four. Last round, however, Sinner raced past Miomir Kecmanovic for the loss of just seven games.
Shelton’s season, and path at Wimbledon, has been a stark contrast. The American won a title in Houston after the Sunshine Double, but has achieved little else across the first six months of the year.
Here at Wimbledon, he’s been forced to work for his spot in the fourth round. Each of his first three matches have gone the distance, with the No. 14 seed most recently seeing off former Wimbledon semi-finalist Denis Shapovalov.
How the Bookies View It: All Signs Point to Sinner
Bookmaker Betfred is incredibly high on Sinner in this clash. So much so that the Italian pays just 1/20 to win, compared to Shelton’s long odds of 9/1. Set betting has this at 3-0 to Sinner as well, with odds of 8/13.
Recent Head-to-Head: It’s a Curveball
Sinner and Shelton have met three times on the ATP Tour, with Sinner leading their head-to-head 2-1.
Anything Else Catch the Eye?
Shelton is one of just six players to defeat Sinner in the past year. He did so at the ATP Masters 1000 in Shanghai, edging the Italian in a tight fifth-set tiebreak. Since then, however, he’s lost twice to Sinner in straight sets.
Sinner vs Shelton Betting Tips & Predictions
Sinner stepped up his game a level in the third round, while Shelton has played 15 sets already this week. We expect Sinner will be a bridge too far for the American, and he’ll flame out in straight sets yet again.
- Sinner to win 3-0 @ 8/13
- Shelton over 13.5 games @ 4/5
Sinner and Shelton play second on No.1 Court this Sunday, around 3pm local time.
