It's just pure frustration at this point. He's A Latchico gets a drop in grade, has proven he handles soft ground the last two times, been placed in better races, but somehow finishes absolutely nowhere, and to add insult to injury he was nearly backed into odds-on. Horse racing at it's finest.
Sandown 1:55 – Etalon 7/4 (1pt, Bet365)
Etalon seems like the obvious place to start for this race, as he is 2/2 over fences, and has won in great style on both occasions.
He might be too obvious, and every time I've gone for the more ‘obvious' winner on paper, they've not been winning in recent weeks, but I won't be changing my style on the back of some bad runs. Etalon looks better than his current mark of 131 and though this race is a deep race for the grade, with many of the horses being rated towards the top of the class bracket, a lot of them have come down the ratings due to poor form, or they have gone up the ratings and remain on very difficult marks. Etalon screams out to me like he can win this and go onto bigger and better handicaps.
Soft ground isn't an issue for him, as he has proven that on many occasions. The track should be fine for him as he finished 4th at this track over hurdles in a decent handicap won by Crambo last year, who has since won a Grade 1.
Sandown 4:46 – Titan Discovery 9/4 (1pt)
There are probably more ‘sexier' types in this race than Titan Discovery, but I think he is the best horse in this race at this moment in time, especially at Sandown and over today's trip, so he is a solid bet in this contest.
I'm sure the JP horse trained by Lucinda Russell will attract support as it is a rare runner at Sandown for connections, but I don't rate the Leicester form which saw him finish 2nd. He will probably appreciate the step up in trip, but I think he isn't the correct price. I think Classic Lord is still on a good mark, and I tipped him up last time out, but he didn't appear to stay on testing ground over 2m 4f so he has to be opposed. My fancy seems the obvious candidate for this race as he ran a belter in a Class 3 contest over today's C&D when finishing behind Jingko Blue, and if it wasn't for the winner, Titan Discovery would've hacked up by 11L and that was deemed to have been a fairly deep race, but he bumped into a well handicapped one from the Nicky Henderson stable. A repeat performance from last time out will be see him in the winner's enclosure.
