WALES' hopes of automatically qualifying for Euro 2024 are a hanging by a thread going into their final Group D fixture with Turkey on Tuesday night.
Rob Page's side looked to have set the wheels in motion for an unlikely Euro 2024 rescue mission following a 2-1 in over Croatia last month.
That damaging seatback means Wales will have to topple Turkey and hope that Croatia come up short against Latvia if they are to avoid the pressure cooker of a March playoff.
As for table-topping Turkey, they have already stamped their ticket to Euro 2024 with a game to spare, having triumphed in five of their seven Group D contests to date.
Vincenzo Montella's men continued their upward curve with a 3-2 friendly away win at Germany on Saturday night.
Outright Betting
Wales are 13/10 (Bet 365) favourites to pick up the three points they require if they are to be in with a shout of securing a top-two berth.
Already-qualified Turkey are 12/5 outsiders with William Hill while a share of the Cardiff City Stadium spoils pays 13/5 with the same firm.
Betting Angles
While Wales are undoubtedly in greater need of the points on Thursday night, I’m prepared to take Turkey here with a +0.25 start on the Asian Handicap at even-money with Bet 365.
Siding with this selection means we will land a winner if the Turks triumph and if the games ends level then we’ll have half our stake returned with the other half deemed a winner.
As already alluded to, Turkey have been ticking along nicely under new boss Vincenzo Montella, with the Italian marking his debut with an eye-catching 1-0 win in Croatia before steering his side to a comfortable 4-0 win over Latvia.
As such, the Crescent Stars have seized control of Group D and you don’t get the impression that they will let any complacency creep in at the Cardiff City Stadium on Tuesday night.
What's more, Montella’s men are not yet assured of first place in the pool, though avoiding defeat in the Welsh capital would guarantee that conclude their campaign as group winners.
While Wales’ home record in recent years has to be respected, they are not the force of old, and that is evidenced by the fact that they have claimed top honours from just three of their last 15 competitive matches.
That doesn’t augur well ahead of a make-or-break clash with a Turkey team that have lost just one of their last 13 European Championship qualifiers.
With all of that in mind, siding with the visitors with a +0.25 start at even-money (Bet 365) is a price that definitely represents value.
