SCOTTISH football is back with a bang this weekend as the League Cup group stage gets underway.
There’s usually a few shocks with Premiership teams going in undercooked and St Mirren, St Johnstone and Hibs all failed to make it through their group last term.
The last thing you want on day one is a road trip to an SPFL outpost and there’s a few big clubs facing those kind of fixtures this afternoon.
Both the Saints are on the road against lower-league opposition while Motherwell, Livingston and Ross County also have long treks.
St Johnstone fans are upset at the lack of new signings this summer but having a settled side could help them in the group stage.
They begin at Stenhousemuir and I fancy them to be winning at half-time and full-time (6/5, BoyleSports).
St Mirren have a tougher game at League One Montrose, a team that is usually good value for goals.
Buddies skipper Mark O’Hara was a regular scorer last term and is 6/4 with McBookie to open his account.
Livi head to Brechin and BTTS stands a chance (6/5, Paddy Power) as City smashed 101 goals on their march to the Highland title last term.
Ross County have one of the longest trips in Scotland as they travel to Stranraer. It could take the Staggies time to get up to speed so I’m betting on most goals in the second half (7/6, VBet).
Motherwell also need to put in the miles with a trip to Elgin and the same bet appeals, with VBet offering 7/6 once more.
It’s women’s final day at Wimbledon with Ons Jabeur the odds-on favourite after beating the second and third seeds in her last two games.
Marketa Vondrousova is a 12/5 outsider, having only won one game at Wimbledon before this year’s tournament.
But the Czech has been in fine form so I fancy over 22.5 games at 11/10 with William Hill.
Under 5.5 breaks of serve also appeals and that bet pays 11/10 with Bet365.

Morning all, as everyone was so good with advice and well wishes, just popping in for a few winning tips and to give a wee update. All tests complete and it looks like my cancer is contained in the colon as a 6cm tumour. Prognosis seems to be pretty good due to my age and the plan is to whip me in a cut it out then blast me with intensive chemo. They hope that might be enough for cure and not treatment, so a rough few months lie ahead but positive outlook and keeping spirits up. I realise I’m one of the lucky ones hopefully, so again gents, if there is anything that doesn’t look or feel right, go and get checked. It’s likely nothing, but that visit to the docs might just save your life.

Vondrousova – Jabeur
It’ll be a first-time Grand Slam champion no matter who wins here. Jabeur who lost narrowly in last years final has made it to two previous grand slam finals losing on both occasions. Vondrousova has only made it past the quarter finals once before when runner up at the 2019 French Open winning just 4 games to Barty. The head to head record stands at 3-3 with both matches this year going the way of Vondrousova. The only previous match on grass was won by Jabeur 6-3 7-6 back in 2021. I have written a fair bit about these two players over the past week and I lot of that can be repeated again here. The first serve percentage of Jabeur will be crucial in this match. If like the semi final she can serve close to 62% again then she has a very strong chance of claiming her maiden grand slam. So far this tournament Jabeur has 48% unreturned first serves compared to 36% for Vondrousova, that’s a significant difference and an awful lot of quick easy points won by Jabeur. She is also winning 80% of her 1st serves in comparison to 70% for Vondrousova. However, the issue here for Jabeur is that her 1st serve percentage is 53% a full 10% less than Vondrousova. The backend performance of both players is very close in terms of winners to unforced errors. There is though a big advantage for Jabeur when it comes to the forehand. She has hit 14 more winners and 23 less errors compared to Vondrousova, so clearly performs much better when out wide. As well as having a higher service hold percentage, Jabeur is also ahead slightly in the stats for break points, net points and baseline points won. So as you can see all of the stats certainly favour Jabeur in this match up and will be significantly more in her favour the higher the 1st serve percentage she can achieve. With the variety and drop shot skills of both players this will be an interesting one to watch and I am really looking forward to it. Something to note is that it does appear that the final will be played under the roof. How this effects both players is difficult to predict. My feel on this one is that I have more confidence in the Jabeur serve & I also believe that she could deal with the occasion slightly better due to being in the same position just last year. So I will be going with Jabeur win here and will be taking the –3.5 game handicap to add a little value. Another area I will be focussing on is the ace and double fault market. This is a market I have had decent success with so far this tournament and in particular with Vondrousova. She committed 6 doubles in her last match and I feel that the nerves could certainly be a factor here again. She also committed considerably more than Jabeur over their 6 head to head matches.

A truly terrible performance from Jabeur, not helped by such a poor serving display. Not quite sure how she managed to lose in straight sets having been 4-2 up in the 1st and 3-1 in the 2nd. Credit to Vondrousova for keeping the errors low & allowing the Jabeur mistakes rack up. Bit of a let down that match as it was pretty poor to watch.
