Saturday was a tough day on paper but I think we did okay to walk away with a solid amount of profit, and even the ones which didn't win ran good races.
The rain landed at Newmarket, thank God. As soon as the going was changing throughout the day I knew we were in business with Vadream who handles soft conditions better than most and knowing she stays 6f, I knew she'd hit the line very well.
Newmarket 2:25 – Queen Of Fairies 7/2 (2pt Paddy)
This is a wide-open race, as you'd imagine with so many horses coming into this with 1s next to their name but I don't think many will handle today's conditions as well as Queen Of Fairies who is yet to race on turf, but based on her pedigree she should be fine, especially on soft ground.
She is by Cracksman and out of a Dubwai mare, with both sides of that pedigree liking soft ground and producing many soft ground horses between them, you'd like to think this lightly raced 3yo daughter of Cracksman will relish the conditions at Newmarket today.
I thought her debut run was very impressive, albeit at a low level at Southwell, but the way she won was impressive and she passed the eye test in my opinion. Travelled strongly through her race and stayed on strongly, suggesting today's trip will bring out plenty of improvement. Charlie Appleby won this race last year, so he knows the type of filly which is required to win.
Newmarket 3:40 – Mammas Girl 9/1 (1pt Paddy) You can obviously go EW as it is and you can get 4 places with all firms, but I'll chance at going for the win.
This is one of the toughest 1000 Guineas I've seen in a long time, and you could say nearly every horse in the race could have a chance, so I won't be getting too heavily involved, but I will be having a bet on Mammas Girl.
If I let this filly go unbacked for this race I'd be kicking myself as I thought her seasonal reappearance was incredible. She looks tailor-made for the 1000 Guineas, she handles the track, she stays well and she has a wicked turn of foot. She won on good to soft last time out, so you'd like to think she'll handle today's conditions as both her Sire and Dam ran well on soft ground. The Dam was running over 10f, so I think that added stamina in her pedigree could be massively advantageous to her chances as it will be tough out there, but knowing she should stay further in time is a positive to me, as many of the others will be toiling in the ground.
If you've not seen her run at Newmarket 18 days ago, I'd highly advise to watch it back as I think you'll be a backer of her on that basis.
Newmarket 4:50 – Saxon King 7/1 (1pt EW Bet365)
Charlie Hills has started his flat turf season off in the right way, he's had plenty of winners already and he was continuing his good form from which he had on the AW at the start of 2023. He has won this race 2 years in the past and outside of those 2 winners he has only saddled one more horse in the race since 2013, so he knows the type of horse which is required to win this race.
Saxon King is Charles' only horse in the race and William Buick has been booked to ride, which is always a positive, especially on the Rowley Mile which is his best track without question. This horse was starting to get rolling towards the back end of last season, and looked like a horse to keep on the right side of for 2023, he won at Haydock on heavy ground, which is a great indicator that he'll run a big race today on tough testing ground. The form seems okay considering it was only a four-runner race, but the form of his runner-up run the time before has started to work out nicely. The winner, third and ninth-placed horses have all won since and some in behind have run well in defeat.
This horse has a decent pedigree, with the Dam being rated in the low 100s and has produced a couple of good horses, so I think a handicap mark of 81 is well within reach and running off a low weight on ground which he handles should see him run a big race.
Hopefully just tips today without the EastEnders omnibus drama
