Liverpool vs Rangers

, KO: 20:00 Oct 4, 2022, Anfield
Rangers

LIVERPOOL and Rangers lock horns in a historic Battle of Britain at Anfield in Champions League Group A on Tuesday night.

These two cross-border rivals were drawn together in a mouthwatering section alongside Ajax and Napoli.

Jurgen Klopp’s Reds were ripped apart 4-1 by Napoli on matchday one before rebounding with a last-gasp 2-1 win over Ajax.

Closer to home, Liverpool’s alarming slump in form in the Premier League continued on Saturday as they were held to a 3-3 draw at home to Brighton.

As for Rangers, they have endured a baptism of fire upon their return to the Champions League following a pair of heavy defeats at the hands of both Ajax and Napoli, the most recent of which brought up my main selection.

That being said, Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side will make the trip south in high spirits after dishing out a 4-0 trouncing to Hearts at Tynecastle in the Scottish Premiership on Saturday.

Outright Betting

Liverpool, who have won each of their last five Champions League group stage fixtures at home, head into this game as red-hot 1/7 (Bet 365) favourites.

As already mentioned, Rangers have lost their opening two group games and the bookies’ unsurprisingly expect that trend to continue, with a Teddy Bears triumph trading at a towering 20/1 (William Hill) while the stalemate is an unfancied 8/1 (UniBet).

Betting Angles

You won't get rich backing the hosts at the aforementioned odds so I'll head to Bet 365‘s Bet Builder market and combine Liverpool Half Time/Full Time and over zero Liverpool second-half goals at 4/5 (Bet 365).

It goes without saying that this is set to be a momentous occasion and I expect the Reds to come flying out the traps with the backing of a raucous home crowd.

Despite their early season struggles, Jurgen Klopp’s star-studded side have scored in eight of their nine outings across all competitions this season so far, notching at least once after the interval in each of their five home games to date.

While Rangers showed incredible resilience to reach last season’s Europa League final, it’s worth pointing out that the Light Blues have claimed top honours in just two of their last 12 continental away games.

What’s more, Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side have failed to keep their sheets clean in 10 of their last 12 European assignments, shipping seven goals across their opening two Champions League Group A outings.

With all this in mind, merging Liverpool Half Time/Full Time and over zero Liverpool second-half strikes looks like a nice alternative angle at 4/5 (Bet 365).

Given Rangers’ aforementioned defensive deficiencies, I’ll also dip into the anytime goalscorer market and back Mohamed Salah to make the net bulge at 5/6 with SportNation.

Although the goals do seem to have dried up a tad for the Liverpool talisman, Rangers’ visit could represent a good opportunity for him to rediscover his scoring touch, and he is also on penalties which is always an added incentive when delving into this market.
