Portugal have finally found their rhythm in the UEFA Nations League and travel to Switzerland in another Group A2 fixture. The Swiss have struggled throughout the competition and although they are at home, should still be no match for the former champions.
Switzerland have been one of the worst teams in this year’s UEFA Nations League and have lost all three of their matches in Group A2. They have already conceded seven goals in all three fixtures and have found the net just once in the competition.
Having been on the road in their opening two matches, Switzerland returned home for their last fixture and still could not get a win. Murat Yakin’s men were beaten 1-0 by Spain in a match where they could only muster one attempt on target.
Although that result was their first home defeat in five matches, Switzerland are not particularly convincing in front of their fans. They have claimed only two wins in that run, and played out a 1-1 draw with Kosovo in their last home fixture prior to the clash with Spain.
Group A2 of the UNL appears to be finally shaping up according to the quality of the teams with Portugal and Spain currently setting the pace. The Portuguese are two points clear at the top of the standings though, having claimed two wins and a draw from their opening three matches.
Portugal have taken things up a notch since playing out a 1-1 draw in Spain in their opening fixture of the competition. They claimed a 4-0 victory over Switzerland before earning a 2-0 win over Czech Republic last time out.
Led by Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal’s attack has delivered as expected but one of the more impressive aspects of their campaign is their defensive solidity. Fernando Santos’ men have conceded just one goal in the group, keeping clean sheets in their last two matches.
How the bookies view it
Portugal have the upper hand among the bookies and are priced at 13/12 by SBK to claim the win. A victory for Switzerland is valued at 3/1 by Paddy Power while a draw is set at odds of 13/5 by bet365.
Recent head to head
Portugal have won the last three matches against Switzerland, including a 4-0 victory in the first meeting in the UNL. However, the former champions were at home for all three wins, with the Swiss claiming a 2-0 victory on home soil during the 2018 World Cup qualifiers.
Players to watch
Portugal boast one of the most stacked attacking lineups in the UNL with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Diego Jota and Bruno Fernandes all capable of getting goals. With Ronaldo likely to be given a rest after playing the full 90 minutes last time out, Jota could be worth keeping an eye on at 2/1 with bet365.
Given the quality in their attack, Portugal’s defensive solidity often gets overlooked as they have kept clean sheets in their last two matches. Pepe remains a vital cog in the backline and alongside Danilo Pereira, can lead the team to another clean sheet 7/4 with BoyleSports.
Anything else catch the eye?
Given Portugal’s defensive solidity and with Switzerland also struggling to create much in attack, BTTS NO can be considered at 11/10 with BetVictor. The Portuguese could also be tipped to earn a third straight win to nil at 13/5 with Unibet.
Portugal’s comfortable victory in the first meeting with Switzerland means a -1 handicap can also be considered at 3/1 with Unibet.
